Embark on the Quest of Duty

Get ready for a thrilling escapade - one whose perilous themes will linger in your heart for long after you've read it. It's definitely an improbable, bold adventure. If you enjoyed the previous two installments in the Men of Grit Series, you'll be certain to enjoy this novel.

This book was different from the other two books in the series, at least to me. It felt much more masculine, as if it were meant for guys. Horn's writing style has always been more bold and blunt, but this novel felt especially so. And the violence was definitely kicked up a few notches. I enjoyed it a great deal, but it does lean on the guy side as far as books go.

On a historical level, I was very happy! This book felt and was very well researched. I even learned some new facts! Of course, as a historian myself, I could quibble over tiny details, but they were a matter of individuality. Every historian has different takes on things. I felt the ancient Roman settlement was very well portrayed. (Hence my 14+ rating.) Topics such as abortion, slavery, and flogging were covered, naturally from an edifying Christian worldview.

I liked the story-line very much. It wasn't a "fluff" book. It was real, gripping, and young men in particular could learn a lot from the godly characters depicted. On the more controversial topics (such as deceiving one's enemy), Horn always explained from the Bible why the characters were doing right. One thing I liked was that this wasn't a happily-ever-after story. I cannot say I was surprised by the ending. Horn tends to give subtle hints about where the story is going, which I like. And the end portrayed the duty of true warriors in a very godly, honest fashion.

I didn't cry, but there were several times (especially the end) where my heart was pounding and I felt sick. Good books do that to you. They make you think and come away changed. This is such a book. I recommend it to historical-fiction fans, history buffs, and young men with a heart to learn about the true duty of warriors.

Bravo!!!
This is an excellent example of the literature this generation needs! It is a story that will transport you through time, and teach the true duty of warriors and Christians, the two being synonymic in this tale of high adventure. John Horn skillfully weaves his stories with the stuff the 'good `uns' are made of - adventure, intrigue, suspense, humor, and best of all, great characters that keep the Christian faith, and strive to do His will, regardless of the cost.

If you are having a difficult time finding good reading material, and/or are trying to keep your kids interested in reading, I recommend getting this book, and the other 'Men of Grit' titles.

P.S. Read the books in order!!! Brothers at Arms, The Boy Colonel, then Secret of the Lost Settlement.

If you like the writings of G.A. Henty, and are looking for a good adventure story with strong, moral characters, this is your book. But remember, you need to read this in the right order. The first two books are The Boy Colonel, and Brothers at Arms.

√ Use the Power of Storytelling

GREAT ANSWERS, GREAT QUESTIONS FOR YOUR JOB INTERVIEW is an extensive resource for use when preparing for a job interview. This book reminds me a little of another great book on job searching--Richard Bolles' What Color Is Your Parachute? 2015: A Practical Manual for Job-Hunters and Career-Changers. Bolles' book is a more general look at job searching, whereas this book focuses more specifically on interviewing. The authors have researched the job interview process in depth, and in this book tell you exactly what the interviewer is looking for, what you should do, and what you should NOT do.

SOME GREAT SECTIONS:

♦ How to use LinkedIn. Block talks extensively about getting your profile in shape. There are even examples of the best type of photograph to have in your profile. There are lots of things that I clearly had no idea about.
♦ "Shift the Focus from Experience to Expertise." Companies want someone who can be an expert--not just someone who has xx years of experience. "Experience does not necessarily differentiate you; expertise does... You need to project that you are the Andre Agassi of your field, an expert rather than a journeyman who has put in her or his time." Never thought of it like that.
♦ Example of the type of form that an interviewer will be filling out. Aha! Now I know what the stern man is doing! This gives you insight on the interviewer's agenda.
♦ Big emphasis on "role playing" to prepare for an interview. Take a video of yourself, practice answering the tough questions. Use index cards to practice. Understand the tough interview questions, and the best response to each. "Use real examples from the past. This is huge."
♦ Getting good at interviewing has nothing to do with luck, and everything to do with preparation. "People who become great at something get there through tons of hard, intentional work.
♦ To support his practice recommendations, Block mentions two great works in the field of expertise, each of which suggests that massive, dedicated practice is the key to expertise--not special talent:
Outliers: The Story of Success and
The Talent Code: Greatness Isn't Born. It's Grown. Here's How.

I would also suggest,
Talent is Overrated: What Really Separates World-Class Performers from Everybody Else.

OTHER GOOD IDEAS:

♦ Prepare a script to break the ice with the interviewer.
♦ Avoid the tiresome, usual responses to the "What is your greatest weakness" question.
♦ Some good questions for you to ask of the interviewer. Show that you have done your homework, and know a lot about the company.
♦ Savvy tips on negotiating a salary and benefits. Never tell them your minimum salary requirements!

Annunzio, consultant with Nextera Enterprises, says that today's CEOs and managers must take a fresh approach to work, even if they're not actively involved in the Internet economy. With changes occurring almost continuously, executives need to recruit the best employees, encourage radical thinking and foster communication (especially among younger workers). Annunzio gives a rare and detailed treatment of the workplace relationship between generations X and Y. Enhanced by real-life examples, her points are sharpened by bulleted lists.

Annunzio is a consultant specializing in leadership, communication, and e-business transformation; has taught business at Chicago's Depaul University; and is an adjunct professor at the University of Chicago. She is also a partner at Nextera, part of the Knowledge Universe consulting and training conglomerate headed by Michael Milken. Annunzio is certainly not the first to make the case that successful companies today must react quickly and be flexible. Good points gained from a rapid reading

eLeadership is written not for new companies but for established companies whose formerly effective business rules are now causing them problems. Change-management specialist Susan Annunzio provides a five-step process for transforming established cultures and structures to enable flexible and fast-paced leadership. The author starts off with observations about the differences between the Baby Boom generation and the X and Y generations. This does serve to focus executives' attention on improving communication between diverse backgrounds, though it inevitably overgeneralizes.
A core part of her book revolves around the 20/60/20 rule. The top 20 percent of the workforce are the change leaders and high-potential performers at every level of the organization. These are the people who can be spurred to ignite change throughout the enterprise. The bottom 20 percent are the complainers and enemies of change. The middle 60 percent can be influenced by either the top or bottom groups, so Annunzio's strategy is to show executives how to use the top 20 percent to influence the middle group while diminishing the power of the obstructive bottom group. The best chapter is probably chapter 4: "Ask the Unaskable, Speak the Unspeakable". Through real-life examples and clearly articulated strategies, this chapter shows how to break through fear and open communications throughout the enterprise, allowing real change to begin. Most of the value of this book can be extracted by careful attention to this chapter while skimming the rest for the key points. The easy style of writing and the author's restraint in book length makes gleaning the core points rapid and painless. If you are part of a company where everyone feels trapped with old rules but where no one dares break out of the mold, this is a fine book to read and put to use.

Save Your Time and Money ! ! !

I thought this book was awful for three reasons.
First, the author spends way too much time discussing how to placate the 20-somethings in the workforce today. Managing a workforce isn't that difficult. Identify what motivates workers, and then establish opportunities to help workers achieve goals. Managers shouldn't be in the business of catering to the whims of their immature staffers. Managers should be leading by example.
Second, the author is extremely vague about the companies she worked with and the accomplishments achieved. The author should have provided a list of concrete examples - company names, their problems and the solutions to those problems. Instead the author dances around the specifics and speaks in broad generalizations. It leads me to believe the author was called into failing companies and made recommendations akin to rearranging the deck chairs on a sinking ship.
A company can have the best management in the world. But if nobody is buying its products and services, the company is doomed to failure. Companies need to figure out what customers want, and then give it to them. Unfortunately, too many e-businesses were trying to convince customers to buy products or services they didn't want and didn't need.
Finally, the author's speaking voice reminds me of nails scraping over a chalkboard. Very squeaky and irritating. Her voice lacked any sense of confidence. This lack of confidence was compounded because she failed to list specific businesses that may have benefited from her advice.
Most speakers do a better job in person. I would like to hear the author in a live presentation to see and hear the difference. I recognize that the book was written at the tail end of the dotcom boom and released in the midst of the dotcom bust. In the heyday of the dotcom revolution, what worked early on did not always apply down the road.
I also noticed that Nextera, "the leading global management consultancy firm" that the author use to work for, has sold off all of its operating units, and is looking for a partner to help relieve the net operating loss of $43 million as of December 31, 2003. Nextera's failure raises a series of questions such as:
Did Nextera not listen to it's own consultants?
Did Nextera follow its own consultants' advice and still fail?
Did Nextera's advice to other companies help or hurt those companies?
Then again, perhaps all the good consultants left the company before the financial problems started. I have searched the web some sort of rebuttal or follow up commentary from the author, but have not found anything.
The Bottom Line: I cannot recommend this book. Read Patricia Seybold's newsletters and publications to see what is and is not working in the technology field.

Great short story

Michael Marshall Smith has become one of my favorite writers recently. I have loved everything I've read by him and this short story was another hit. Previously I have read several of his books, and have been trying to catch on on the rest of his work. This short story was fantastic. It is a blend of science fiction and horror that kept me reading until it was finished. The characters were well developed and the pacing was perfect. I love how the story goes back and forth between telling what happened and the present, and how things got to be the way they are. I'm looking forward to reading more from this author and would recommend this story to anyone who likes sci-fi or horror.

Fantastic concept on the "end of civilisation" type theme. Caught me off guard. Thoroughly enjoyed, and whilst it could have been dragged out for a full length novel, I was glad it wasn't. It would have been spoilt. Highly recommend for a 30 minute read

The Spanish Civil War, fought between 1936 and 1939, was the first battle against fascism in Europe. Five months after the victory of dictator Francisco Franco in Spain the conflict moved to Europe with the outbreak of the Second World War. Fascism and anti-fascism again faced each other on the battlefield. Amid the heat of the Nazi invasions in Europe, anti-fascist resistance groups formed by ordinary citizens emerged in virtually all European countries. Although the Franco dictatorship was not directly involved in the world war, in Spain an anti-Franco resistance movement was organized in 1939 and lasted until 1952. Although the Spanish resistance constituted the first and last anti-fascist resistance movement in Europe, the Spanish case has been consistently overlooked by international studies. This book inserts the Spanish anti-Franco resistance into the European context, proposing a new narrative of anti-fascist resistances in Europe.
