Review
"There's nothing funny about mind games in the workplace, say the authors of this sober-minded guide to understanding underhanded office maneuvers. Simply waking up to games people play and rejecting them is a big part of the battle for executives, say the authors."
—Andrea Sachs, TIME magazine, April 30, 2009

From the Inside Flap
As long as people have worked together, they have engaged in political games. Motivated by short-term gains—promotions, funding for a project, budget increases, status with the boss—people misuse their time and energy. Today, when many organizations are fighting for their lives and scarce resources there is increased stress and anxiety, and employees are engaging in games more intensely than ever before.

Organizational experts Mauricio Goldstein and Philip Read argue that office games—those manipulative behaviors that distract employees from achieving their mission—are both conscious and unconscious. They can and should be effectively minimized. In Games at Work, the authors offer tools to diagnose the most common games that people play and outline a three-step process to effectively deal with them. Some of the games they explore include:

  • Gotcha: identifying and communicating others' mistakes in an effort to win points from higher-ups
  • Gossip: engaging in the classic rumor mill to gain political advantage

  • Sandbagging: purposely low-balling sales forecasts as a negotiating ploy

  • Gray Zone: deliberately fostering ambiguity or lack of clarity about who should do what to avoid accountability

Filled with real-world, entertaining examples of games in action, Games at Work is an invaluable resource for managers and all professionals who want to substitute straight talk for games in their organizations and boost productivity, commitment, innovation, and—ultimately—the bottom line.

Insightfull and entertaining

Games at Work help us to increase our awareness on games (conscious and unconscious) played within organizations. Goldstein and Read show their ability to give us insights on identifying and neutralizing these games that are so counterproductive for organizations. At the same time, give us a lot of fun reading it! Great book!

Mind opening
By Juliana H. Vajda
I wish Goldstein and Read had written "Games At Work" a few years earlier, while I was still working at a bank in New York City! After reading the book, I could recognize so many situations that, even though went "under the radar", clearly affected all of us, turning the workplace into a battlefield - and a much unnecessary one.

Besides the elucidative definition of the different situations, tricks and traps of the corporate world --and the brilliant ways that one can work around or escape them-- "Games at work" is a fun, catching read!

Mind opening for everyone.

Rules for Games
By Reader
There are many ways in which well-intended, hard-working people get tripped up in the workplace, and "Games" uncovers many of them. Goldstein and Read's account of the subtle, and sometimes not so subtle, tricks and traps provides an eye-opening look into modern organizations.

The difficult choice for everyone, whether "to play" is presented clearly and with compelling support. Although the decision remains fundamentally challenging, the authors present a useful way to think about it.

This is a fascinating read for anyone who works in or with a large organization today.

Great novella to compliment this awesome series!
By Tina Marie Reiter
Hotness Rating 5 out of 5

I am a huge fan of the Girl Series by Kate Baum and these little in-between novellas are perfect to give us a peek into the lives of some of the secondary characters that we've come to really love. Naughty Girl (Girl Series 3.5) brings us the story of Joe and Cora. We met Cora and Joe in Brave Girl (Girl series #2) when Eve moved to the reservation to begin her service as a librarian in exchange for furthering her education. Cora is one of the fellow teachers housed with Eve. I fell in love with this group of girls almost as much as I did the original "girls" of this series. I am so happy to read more about them.

Joe wouldn't know what to do if he wasn't working hard. He helps out on a friend's farm, he does last minute deliveries to the local watering hole when they are running low and he drives the reservation teachers to and from work. He likes to stay busy, but he really likes that he met Cora. He's laid back and willing to take things as they come. He knows that Cora is the girl for him and quickly finds just how well they are matched.

Cora was raised in inner city Detroit by her beloved grandmother. She knows what it's like to work your butt off to just get by. That's why she always knew that a good education was her only way out. She's always had a calm and in-control personality which services her perfectly as she teaches the adolescents in her class on the reservation. Things weren't always easy for them on the reservation. In the beginning they were judged and treated unfairly because of their "outsider" status. Which is one of the first things that drew her to Joe. He was always kind and had a nice word to share.

When Joe and Cora finally come together it's sweet and loving. Cora is thrilled with her relationship, but feels like there is something missing. Then she stumbles across a how-to book for the aspiring dominatrix and everything just seems to click. She's done her research and all that's left to do is put her plans into action.

This book is definitely more of a tale of self-discovery than anything else. Cora and Joe already have their love match, but in this story we get to see Cora come into herself. And what a hot ride it turns out to be.

Are you A Naughty Girl????

What a twist, that Kate brings to us as readers with Naughty Girl (Book 3.5) of the The Girl Series. OUTSTANDING. It is amazing how Kate can bring her characters to life when she writes. Cora who is "Brave Girl" - Book 2 Eve's roommate has fallen head over heels in love with Joe. If you have read Kate's Girl Series and have read Brave Girl, then you will see where some of this attraction between Cora and Joe has started.
Cora grew up a little bit on the rough side of life. Where Joe has grown up his whole life on the Reservation that they currently live on now. It is extremly hard to get some "alone" time when you both have roommates.
As Eve has a name for all in her life, Cora can't wait to find out what Eve comes up with for her. Here comes the twist, how many of you women out there ever thought of being the Dom and not the Sub. When Cora discovers this little secrect about herself, watch how for once the roles are reversed and Kate takes us in the woman's behind the scenese of being a Dom. Learn with the "Rules" of the proper way to be a female Dom. To Take CONTROL. TO Have Control.
The question is, can Cora take it to the next limit and follow through with her inner desire or will she back out. Will Joe take the bait and be Cora's Sub or will he take over and take control?
Once again, Kate Baum grasped my attention, took hold. This is the perfect Novella to set her readers on the question and quset for Smart Girl - Dee's story.

The Devil In The Detail: How The Arms Deal Changed Everything, by Paul Holden, Hennie van Vuuren

The South African 'Arms Deal' was never a single event. Rather it was, and still is, a series of scandals and outrages, all contributing towards a dubious momentum that takes South Africa further away from transparent democratic practice. The Devil in the Detail, written by two of South Africa's leading researchers on the subject, takes the reader on a journey of insight. Witness at close hand the breaking open of State secrets, with tales of outrageous personal enrichment. Explore how the Arms Deal emerged out of the criminal networks of both the old SADF and the ANC's security apparatus, raising questions as to whether South Africa's remarkable transition was not oiled, at key points, by criminal intent and collusion. Follow the trail of the various offset deals done after the Arms Deal - cumulatively worth just as much as - and discover that corruption continues to impact on defence spending in South Africa. Examine the economics and witness how the Arms Deal was not only economically irrational, but virtually suicidal, almost single-handedly derailing the post-apartheid economic project. Finally, read about the rise of the 'shadow state', the politicisation of prosecutions, and the rise of the 'spooks'. The remarkable conclusion of this landmark study is that years after the deal took place, the forces that drove its decisions have only grown in strength, further blighting South Africa's prospects for a future in which all may have a share.

The Aficionado's Guide to the "Arms Deal"
By not me
Few non-South Africans have heard of the "Arms Deal," but it is THE great political scandal of post-1994 democratic South Africa. The rotten story began with a decision by the new ANC government to procure super-expensive high-tech weapons. Not only were these weapons not needed for the defense of the nation, but the tenders were hijacked by crooks who paid bribes to ANC pols and fixers. Even the current President, Jacob Zuma, took money. Given the country's crying social needs, the revenue wasted on these weapons was a mockery of the ideals of the liberation struggle. Yet the scandal has never been properly investigated, and it continues to fester in South Africa's collective political consciousness, undermining confidence in democratic institutions and leaving the ANC fearful of future disclosures.

"The Devil in the Detail" is a detailed reconstruction of the complex scandal. It is filled with information about the manipulation of tenders and it offers highly-informed conjectures about who got the bribes. It's a great book and is essential reading for anyone interested in modern South African history. I took off one star only because the text frequently wanders off topic, as, for exemaple, in the opening chapter, which discusses at length the development of a culture of secrecy in the MK and SANDF during the 1980s. The discussion was interesting but hardly necessary to unpacking and understanding the Arms Deal. I suspect it was originally written for a different purpose altogether.

Essential reading, but also horribly flawed
By Yossarian Pilgrim
This book is an important and timely contribution to the maturing genre of post-Apartheid scholarship that is more comfortable breaking several taboos about the New South Africa. It stitches together an untold number of threads from various scandals, investigations, snippets and reports to produce a compelling indictment of South Africa's leaders. More importantly, it confirms the failure of South Africa's political system and structures which are the result of a failed constitutional process.

However, the book also suffers from several serious flaws that will result in limited distribution and very few readers bothering to go cover-to-cover, which is why I cannot award it more than three stars.

Firstly, the editing was disastrous. Unfortunately, we are now accustomed to South African publishers doing as little editing, fact-checking and quality control as possible. They are not so much publishers as printing and marketing intermediaries these days. Given the book's subject matter it raises suspicions of outright sabotage; a Joint Investigate Report mini-me...

The editing failure was no doubt aided by the sort of turgid and contorted prose that is a hallmark of South African scholars active in non-scientific fields. For example, look at the number of times "combustible" is used. The count is so high that it moves from being merely sloppy to a fetish. There is also an irritating habit of reprising instead of editing for clarity.

Second, and related, the structure of the content is miserable. The book should have worked in reverse chronological order for reasons of pace and historical plot development.

Third, the opening chapters betray some of the maddening reticence to be too critical of the ANC. The psychology of this deference comes from the conflation of the ANC and democracy which the party and its cohorts assiduously cultivate. It is time for SA scholars to stop pretending that the ANC was both necessary and sufficient for a democratic formation on the southern tip of Africa.

Fourth, and related, this reflexive "big L" Liberalism produces tunnel vision about South Africa past, present and future. For example, the authors situate the roots of the Arms Scandal in the national military-industrial complex's casual approach to human rights on both sides of the Apartheid conflict. As a result the opening chapters are a conclusion meandering in search of evidence. It was an unnecessary and fruitless digression though expected because of the author backgrounds and expertise.

They are "conflict and security" wonks (of a pacifistic persuasion) and they were determined to make their particular view of the field central to SA's historical narrative. This leaves the Arms Deal to be viewed as an aberration birthed by "militarization". It is a dangerously narrow idea that must be flattened if SA is to have any chance of saving its democracy if it's not already too late.

The authors inadvertently stumble upon the fertilizer that allowed arms procurement corruption to blossom. They rightly point out the insidious nature of the ANC's taxpayer rent-seeking and touch on the incentive to corrupt SA's mineral wealth, but fail to fingerprint its antecedents in van der Stel, Rhodes and the National Party, to name some distant and very recent examples.

South Africa's political structures are desperately allergic to liberty. It has always been a redoubt for tyranny - both soft and hard - and visible in indigenous as well as imported politics. It's the sort of society that Rousseau, Hobbes, Moore, Plato, et al would easily recognize as their intellectual spawn.

Failing to recognize this, the authors are left searching for cause in consequence.

The unfortunate reality is that the ANC has taken most of the baton from the National Party. Both parties obsessed with social engineering, and allowed corrupt networks of elites to set the agenda for their benefit. This is why once implacabble enemies became chums in a heartbeat. It had nothing to do with a clique of military types finding common cause in subverting democracy for personal gain. Their actions were only possible because the new Constitution perpetuated a model best described as National Oligarchical Socialism.

ANC-NP differences were never honestly ideological except at a rhetorical level. A succession of socialist administrations underscore the point, as seen in the cloning of Afrikaner Empowerment (General Mining Corp. etc) and the happy resort to the most odious Apartheid era legal circumlocutions and meddling to justify, secure, and promote the elite (witness the recent evasions by Maharaj).

Fifth, and also related, are some key factual failures. For example, the authors perpetuate the thoroughly debunked myth that the SADF suffered a defeat at Cuito Cuenevale (the "African Stalingrad".... ). The bias is made more obvious by the praise lavished on the ANC's first - and failed - efforts at infiltration into South Africa to wage war.

So let's clear it up quickly - the SADF suffered a severe intelligence failure in 1986-87 that allowed an unprecedented Soviet-sponsored sea and air lift of vast quantities of sophisticated weapons to be positioned close to the UNITA base at Mavinga. Once discovered, the SADF was ordered to *block* any advance on Mavinga. SADF forces were never advancing on Cuito and were in fact prohibited from assaulting Cuito successfully despite opportunities to do so.

Despite the near total loss of air superiority thanks to the introduction of Cuban piloted MIG-23s and surface-to-air missiles, a SADF force that amounted to little more than a full-strength battalion backed by UNITA guerrillas routed several Angolan brigades and locked the survivors down in Cuito for the remainder of the conflict. Indeed, Castro was so incensed at the failure in the East that he escalated by moving a massive force comprising some of his best conventional units into position across from Ruacana in the West.

Another consequence of the authors' blind spot in this respect is the failure to acknowledge that the end of Apartheid was more a product of the end of the Cold War than sanctions. The collapse of the Soviet Union removed the basis for the "Total Onslaught", and curtailed Cuba's colonial ambitions for lack of funds and support.

However, it is possible that the authors did this in order to avoid having the book automatically denounced as it surely would be if Chester Crocker was mentioned as anything but an imperialist and a reactionary. A little sugar to make the medicine go down...

In conclusion, the book confirms just how widely SA missed its opportunity to reset its civil society in favor of liberty. The Constitution was wall-papered with show-piece rights motivated by egalitarianism, but it left intact the ancient and deadly bacterium of tyranny. The design of the parliamentary system was deeply flawed and all but guarantees more of the same. And so it is that the ANC has become the same parasite on the very people to whom it promised freedom, dignity and opportunity.

You will be more informed for reading this book, but be prepared for a needlessly frustrating experience.

One by One, by Phil Tucker

For Peter, the end of civilization begins quietly with the disappearance of his mother. At the police station he learns that thousands of others have gone mysteriously missing overnight, and that tens of millions more are vanishing daily across the globe. Without explanation humanity finds itself facing its final year on the planet, and it is only then that Peter falls in love.

Her name is Sophia, and though both are haunted by loss they find in each other a passion that is as real as it is worth fighting for. As the government buckles and then collapses, as the darkest registers of human nature are sounded and a brutal demagogue rises to lead a reign of terror, they strive to find meaning and purpose in a world that is bereft of all certainties but one: that they too are fated to disappear.

interesting take on the post-apocalyptic scenario
By Jamie Dorn
One By One is the story of an unexplained wave of disappearances, and the social breakdown that swiftly follows.

The novel follows the misfortunes of a young freelance writer, Peter, when his cancer-stricken mother is among the first to disappear. At the police station, he meets a beautiful young woman, Sophia, who is there to report her little brother missing.

And then it gets worse.

Tucker's prose is at times so beautiful that it nearly made me cry. His description of the city throughout the stages of this disaster is genius. The transition in Peter, also, from loner to survivor was wrenching. Those were the passages I enjoyed the most, were the ones that simply described what was happening to the world while Peter watched.

As a writer, Tucker's gift lies in his diction and pacing. The man knows how to write prose, and there are moments of genuine humor and warmth between Peter and other people that gave him the motivation to keep going. The ending, without giving it away, was brilliant, and the lack of explanation for what the hell was going on was strangely satisfying. I just wish the characters had talked less.

No one is given a name beyond Peter and Sophia, and everyone speaks in a manner that I can only describe as clinically enlightened. Nearly every observation they make, whether it's about what they're having for dinner or how they feel about the fact that they might be the next person to disappear, they make with such cold precision that I found it distracting after a while.

While the novel works as an allegory for the insulation, infatuation, and inevitable breakdown that comes from falling in love, and does a superb job of examining the numbness and fear and uncertainty that comes along with accepting human mortality, I wondered if the dystopia hadn't been established prior to all of the disappearances, if Tucker hadn't built a world where everyone was burnt-out and disillusioned, and it took a catastrophe of world-ending proportions to invoke genuine emotion in these people.

The Grind Show has been bumped up on my to-read list.

I'm not sure exactly how to rate this book
By Lauren E. Pomerantz
I'm a re-reader. If I like a book, I will read it over and over. I've read Connie Willis's Passage, Bellwether, and To Say Nothing of the Dog at least a half-dozen times each. Ditto Bill Bryson's A Walk in the Woods, Neil Gaiman's Neverwhere, Chris Crutcher's Whale Talk, many of the early Koontz, and I've forgotten how many times I've read Robert Heinlein's books.

So it's hard for me to recommend a book I know I will never read again. But I enjoyed it, mostly. So.... **[Please see end]

First of all, the premise is fascinating. Most apocalyptic fiction has a definite reason behind it. Maybe it's a virus or drug that turns people into zombies or prevents people from reproducing, as in Children of Men. Maybe it's a war, as in Farnham's Freehold or Pulling Through. Maybe it's an asteroid impact or an alien invasion. And almost always there's something that can be done. There are bomb shelters and guarded compounds and astronauts who sacrifice their lives; there are brave humans carrying on; or even miraculous spontaneous recoveries. Even the movie Knowing didn't have the guts to end all life on Earth. But Phil Tucker does. Once people start disappearing, there is no cause ever discovered, and no reprieve.

And the writing is wonderful. When I started, Tucker's descriptive prose felt a little heavy handed. I've been reading a lot of YA stuff and lighter fare lately, and I wasn't prepared for what felt like long-winded verbosity. But as the book progressed and I adapted, it was fantastic. I loved it. And I think he's the only person who uses a form of "susserate" besides Koontz.

I loved the characters. I really felt for them. I got wrapped up in their fear and their resignation and their love and their anger. And up until maybe 10 pages before the end, I would say that this book was one that I would read and re-read every year or so to re-experience the emotions that it engendered.

The one thing I didn't like was the way the characters sometimes spoke to each other. It was too analytical. It felt like a discussion in the English literature department by a group of PhDs on the deconstruction on post-modern something-or-other. It didn't feel natural. It reminded me a lot of some of the dialogue in Asimov's Foundation trilogy. But maybe this is how people talk when they don't have anything else to do except contemplate their own mortality.
___

**When I originally wrote this review, I commented that the ending had seriously disturbed me, leading me to say that while I enjoyed reading it, I would not be able to re-read it and had severe trepidation about recommending it to others.

Since that time (mere hours ago) I have been contacted by the author, who had realized exactly what had disturbed me and said that it had been unintentional. He was also bothered by the event, to the point that he has edited the book. I have not yet downloaded the changed work, but based on his assurances, I now wholeheartedly recommend this book.

Terrible ending
By A. Jordan
I wanted to like this book. The story line is pretty original and I kept reading to find out why people were disappearing. After a while, the story rambles on and I found myself skipping paragraphs and eventually pages at a time just trying to get through it. As another reviewer mentioned, the dialog is unnatural. The characters speak in large words and they all sound the same. I consider myself an intelligent person and I found myself having to look up words because I'd never seen them before. Anyway, the ending was a disappointment. I won't spoil the book but to me, the ending didn't resolve anything. Sorry to be so negative but I just didn't care for this book.

    Practical, Insightful, and One-of-a-Kind
    By Andy Bellatti
In "90 Days, 90 Ways" Alexia Vernon expertly details how Millennials (those born between 1980 and 2000; also known as "Generation Y") fit into today's corporate structure. Too often, a good amount of workplace anxiety, misunderstandings, and clashes are the result of two generations (with two very different sets of values) not understanding where the other one is coming from.

Any manager or HR professional who picks up this book will essentially have special access to a Millennial's mind as they begin a new job. This is a tremendous advantage, since having this knowledge will result in Millennial employees feeling valued, respected, understood, and listened to -- the perfect formula for a motivated and contributing team member. If, upon reading this book, you realize your company doesn't onboard young professionals in this manner, you'll definitely want to change that soon!

Despite being rich in content, the book is an easy read thanks to Ms. Vernon's approachable, friendly, and often humorous tone that disperses pop culture references throughout.
