The mutual love affair between people and their place is one of the most powerful influences in our lives, yet rarely thought of in terms of a relationship. As cities begin thinking of themselves as engaged in a relationship with their citizens, and citizens begin to consider their emotional connections with their places, we open up new possibilities in community, social and economic development by including the most powerful of motivators--the human heart--in our toolkit of city-making. The book explores what makes cities lovable, what motivates ordinary citizens to do extraordinary things for their places and how some cities, such as New Orleans, Detroit, and Cleveland are using that energy to fill in the gaps that "official" city makers have left as resources have disappeared. Meet those amazing people who are truly "in love" with their cities and learn how they are key to the future development of our communities.
Praise for the book:
What Kageyama has done is to introduce the vital piece into the urban discussion-- the matter of love; the piece without which all city building must fail, for "love" the corner stone of civic citizenship. It takes some bravura and acumen to champion the subject of love in the urban forum that wants to quantify, when only love qualifies and justifies the discussion of cities. Mr. Kageyama goes one step further. He provides precious indicators. Many city thinkers will follow suit, but for the time being, this is the essential book.

For the Love of Cities succeeds in putting an exclamation point on the exceptional value of deepening the relationship that city dwellers feel for their neighborhoods by adding amenities such as parks, outdoor cafes, art galleries, trees, flowers and even sidewalks to create a meaningful sense of place. It also explores the often hidden added value of creative entrepreneurs in creating a sense of place that attracts, nurtures and retains citizens.
The book is a love note from Author Peter Kageyama to cities everywhere that will prompt you to more closely examine your own relationship with where you live, work and play.

Peter has captured something very important... love. When we love a city, we are committed to it, we engage with it, we care for it, we give our best to it. A city that is loved also gives back. It makes those who live there feel enriched. And so you have a virtuous cycle.

A simple book on how to love your city on the way to prosperity
By C. Gallagher
I love to find powerful books to add to my urban design library - especially books with great quotes about city building! Peter Kageyama's new book fits the bill. Here's a few insights from Peter:
"We experience cities emotionally, yet we talk about them technically, As we have built our cities we have done so in a mechanical way, thinking about the city as a machine when it is far more of a complex living organism".
"In an economy where talent comes in all shapes, sizes and ethnicities, where the best places have to compete for the best talent in the world, the only way to retain talent is to offer the kind of place that provides emotional attachment".
"I believe that if you examined who really builds, contributes to and essentially 'makes' a city you would find that those citizens who have an emotional connection with their city make the difference".
"The city, as a whole, is made by a relatively small number of 'co-creators' who-in their roles as entrepreneurs, activists, artists, performers, students, organizers and otherwise 'concerned citizens' - create the experiences that most of us consume".
"Find ways to engage the human heart, which I believe will prove to be the most powerful tool ever unleashed in the development of our communities".
"When Cities are loved, they too thrive. When we recognize we are in a relationship with our place, we start to treat it differently and we act accordingly".
For the Love of Cities is filled with lots of examples of individuals from all around the country demonstrating a love of place and making a difference in their communities.
For community leaders involved in economic development Mr Kageyama's book is a breath of fresh air and offers a way to capture and articulate what makes one city more attractive, more lovable, and ultimately more economically sustainable than the next.

Inspiring Love of Cities
By Mark W. Stenson AIA
Having lived and worked in Boston, Providence, and Tampa as an Architect I have seen many of the positives and negatives regarding city and placemaking. In this book, Peter brings to light the idea that the single most important tool to making a city grow and become livable is love. Through inspiring stories from around the country he shows that not just established cities and towns are worthy of this love but that those cities that seem small or troubled have the most opportunities for the hard working creators to make the greatest impact. Love will reap the best harvest in these cities that need it most.
For those out there that wonder how they can get involved or make their place better, this book provides true examples of how to do so and will inspire you to make it happen. It's a great read and I wish more would take his words to heart. Our cities would be much better places to live if we all did.

FOR THE LOVE OF INSIGHT
By T. Prentice
This book took a topic that interests me, and unexpectedly made it even more interesting to me. The author clearly has a passion for his topic, and manages to convey a lot more in the way of interesting ideas and insights that I frankly expected. For example, I have been for years lamenting America's evolution into what I call "strip mall hell", but Kageyama provides a well-researched and surprisingly interesting time line....a succession of various motives, legislation, and even prejudices that got us here. Better yet, he presents a path forward so that we can become more than just a "functional" society, and get back to what made us love cities before we went awry. Anyone who loves the great metropolises of the world (past, present or future) and wants to belong to them deserves to read this insightful and often witty book.
