"The tear in the masculine soul."

Many men are burdened with anger and fear, and harm themselves and others as a result. Even professing Christians lash out at their loved ones, or hold their rage inside until they suffer a physical or mental breakdown. Why are men this way? What can the women who love them do to help? "Boiling Point" provides answers to these questions. It's a Christian book, but non-believers will benefit from its insights and principles, which are applicable to men regardless of their beliefs.

This review's titular quote from Catholic priest Ted Dobson is used by Arterburn and Stoop to describe the damage done to men by the lack of a father figure. According to the authors, due to an absent or passive father boys often grow up without proper instruction on how to be a mature man. Without that key role model, they fail to internalize male attributes during their formative years. These boys grow up to be men who suffer from an emotional deficit that they will try to fill with possessions, achievement, and power. But nothing can quell their sense of loss and inadequacy. Therefore, they continue to stew in a perpetual state of anger and fear. Add external pressures from work and family, and men are, well, at the boiling point. At this stage, anything can cause a meltdown. Jobs are lost because of screaming matches with the boss, and relationships are destroyed by attempts to medicate with secret addictions to sex or narcotics. Is there a way for males to deal with their issues and become the men they want to be?

The past can't be changed, but there's still hope in the present. "Boiling Point" was written for women who are married to an angry, fearful man. That's because wives are usually the victims of their husband's issues, whether emotionally or physically. However, a man's wife is also his best hope for healing. To this end, the authors use examples from men's lives to show women how to recognize the warning signs in her loved one. Helpful tools are provided that will help her grasp the situation and lovingly encourage him towards wholeness. For example, each chapter concludes with a section called "Think About It; Talk About It with Him," which contains various types of questions geared towards this goal. The authors admit that the positive conversational examples are best-case scenarios, so it will usually take time and patient effort to see good results. Of course, he must ultimately desire to heal and change as well.

Men shouldn't be put off by the book's focus towards a woman reader. Like Secret deodorant, "Boiling Point" is strong enough for a man, even though it's made for a woman. The authors caution men to avoid the trap of isolation, and exhort them to seek help from trained counselors and other men who can bear their burdens. I saw myself in some of the stories, and the root causes of my anger and fear (along with my inferior responses) were clarified. I was encouraged along the path of dealing with my past hurts and present issues instead of letting them rule me. And the cautionary tales warned me of the consequences of not doing so. For that, I commend the authors.

"Boiling Point" is a necessary book for angry, fearful men and the women who love them. Read it and get help before it's too late.

Boiling Point Makes Readers Boil

At first glance Boiling Point appears to be written for a general audience of couples, but only one chapter in the reader quickly discovers it's true intent is to teach women to take on the responsibility of diffusing their man's temper.

It opens with a breif story of an angry man throwing a fit in his backyard and shooting his lawnmower. The authors then excuse this behaviour by taking the reader on an opinion-based, and uncredited tour through history, blaming all manly rage on the industrial revolution.

Apparently Dads historically stopped farming and went to the office, leaving Mom to do the impossible job of raising her sons properly. How could she? After all she is not a man, and therefore can't offer any adequate training for her growing boys.

Nowhere in this book are men's behaviors considered their own responsibility. In fact the authors would have the wives take charge of this area by counselling, advising, affirming, and leading men back to their little happy places as alpha males in society.

I would like to know how it is that Moms are not equipped to keep their boys from boiling over after 21 years of raising them (supposedly alone). Why, then, are wives suddenly capable of stepping in and reversing the negative effects of absentee Dads after reading this enlightening book? What is this? The new Men's Liberation Movement?

The book crudely asks its female readers to rate themselves on how adequately and regularily they affirm their spouses "bodies" and "performances in bed." It asks women to ignore bad behavior and try to "fix" it by counter attacking with flattery. In essence, it asks women to allow men to be angry and not hold them accountable, because after all, it's not their fault. It's their Father's fault for bailing out. It's society's fault for advancing in technology and industry instead of agriculture. It's anybody's fault--just not the angry man's.

The authors could politely write a sequel to diffuse women who reached their own boiling point after reading this strange piece of fiction.

Excellent read. A good self-help book for all

Excellent read. A good self-help book for all, especially those entering into a relationship, or already in one whether this is an issue or not.

It definitely makes clear the heart of the breadown in a family unit, lack of spiritual leadership, co-dependency, and abuse situations. My opinion is this should be a standard teaching in our educational system as well as a starting basis within the home for parents.

Written as a college text...

...this book is part of the Cambridge University Press' "New Approaches to European History" series. The three authors are professors of history at Oberlin, Amiens, and Nanterre.

I liked this book because the authors present a truly French (as opposed to Anglophone) history of the Great War. Because they are modern historians, they discuss in detail the structure of the narrative, and conflicting narratives, around the history, social, economic, and political struggles internal to France; the fulfillment of the Social Contract between the soldiers and the generals; and the mutual dehumanization of the "Other" in the artillery and machine-guns of the front.

Having "won" the Great War, what remained for France to do but to enter a century of public and private mourning. And within 21 years of the Versailles treaty, the Nazi's turned around and did it all over again, on a larger scale.

This is a "professional history" volume, not a trade paperback. It is very well written, however, and I learned a lot that I had not had access to in other more "popular" histories.

Excellent architecture refresher for Comp Sci

My background: I have degrees in Computer Science and Physics. My last architecture class was in 1994, however. This book was precisely at my level -- someone who is relatively familiar with hardware but not overly so.

I believe that this book presents itself as too limited a scope -- it is an excellent review for anyone looking to understand more about many aspects of computer technology from memory to buses to communication. It is a book that easily removes any mystery behind the actual workings of signals and communication protocols.

Furthermore, it is a very easy book to read -- it doesn't get lost in math, but it does dive in to multiple types of current chips to use for project development. If you are looking to get into embedded systems for project development (say, with an Aduino), this is a perfect book for that.

The important thing about this book is to remember the level and audience -- if you are an expert in Electrical Engineering, you will not appreciate this book. If you have never heard of any technologies involved, it may be a little difficult to read through it as well. If, however, you have heard of DDR2 but don't know exactly how you'd use that component in a circuit or code a low-level driver to communicate to it, or if you have heard of RS232 but don't know how you'd make a system to speak it, this is the book for you.

Covers Far More Architecture than Embedded Alone

Scholarly articles are atwitter with the fact that embedded systems are growing at an unprecedented, exponential rate, with patents far outstripping enhancements to general processing. If you're an old pro, take note, if you're in school, consider this for career planning. But wait... embedded systems are now being defined by what they are NOT-- the exception that defines the rule-- meaning your general purpose PC. Almost everything else out there with ANY specialized "action" now fits the embedded model!

This is absolutely the BEST book for beginning and intermediate readers on hardware design, not just for embedded because of the above, but for ANY modern microprocessor design. Lipiansky writes with gentle kindness but doesn't talk down-- it is a real pleasure to explore even the tougher sections. As an example, you'll learn a LOT about digital signal processing, but not get into the required Fourier math for detail. You'll also understand characteristic impedance without having to solve PDE's. In short, Ed is a low-ego teacher and doesn't waste time showing off what he knows-- a true teacher.

Because it is so up to date, you'll cover all the "old" acronyms like RS232C and PLA, but also learn about today's hottest systems such as USB and CPLD. Before your eyes glaze over with acronyms, Ed wakes us up frequently with numerous real world applications from auto sensors to cell phones, medical devices, appliances, GPS, music players, power sytems (with the one exception of steady state sinusoidals and power transmission), motors, control systems, and hundreds more.

Anyone in IT or software needs this book! I know it's costly, but is simply just PACKED with all the most up to date architecture info you'd need 9 other books to find. Ed doesn't just stop at the most up to date component designs and interfaces, he also generously covers networking, routing and many other topics at the top of today's technology list. Since he's been with Google, he doesn't just define embedded as a dedicated chip for your Arduino dinosaur, but also the dedicated chip that monitors and maintains a server.

I wouldn't recommend this to an advanced EE, but EVERYONE ELSE from hobbyists to students from advanced HS to undergrad, to software engineers used to general console design but wanting to move toward embedded, to anyone interested in the most modern microprocessor designs and techniques. When "big box" people think embedded, they immediately start wondering about memory limitations, sensor interfaces, weight, size, etc. -- and they are right! But embedded techniques then "give back" to the big box guys when they remember things like heat generation!

I understand budgets, especially for students, but this is far cheaper than four other textbooks I reviewed in the field that don't have, together, half of the info you'll get here on "what makes a computer tick." Tables and diagrams are also outstanding-- this is clearly a teacher that understands many of us learn with different styles.

Perfectly targeted

For many years I worked at an embedded HW company, in the capacity of SW engineer, writing code which ran on a proprietary HW computing platform.
When I started working at that company, I would have dearly loved to have a copy of this book. I'm not kidding - there were so many things I didn't know and there aren't that many really good practical references, with emphasis on "practical". This book provides good overviews of the various systems in an embedded computing platform, all from an architectural perspective, which is precisely the level the working SW engineer needs in order to be productive.

If you have worked in a professional capacity as a microprocessor designer, this book will be too basic for you. But if you are a SW engineer working at a very low level, on the bare metal, or you are working in an embedded HW capacity, this book is a fantastic resource. Need to better understand transmission line signal reflection? High level aspects of PCB design? A primer on logic analyzers? Address decoding?

I give this book 5 stars because it is the most accurately targeted and best one of its kind that I know about.

No online code for my Spanish lab

My class requires the access to the online myspanishlab feature that isn't free. This book didn't come with an access code so now in addition to purchasing this book which I thought would include access to that feature, I will have to spend additional money to purchase access to an online feature that should have came with the book.

How to Color-Code Your Bible is Fun and Encourages Deeper Bible Study

If you were told as a young person, as I was, that writing or coloring in your Bible was a sin, I encourage you to re-think that life commandment that someone “put on you.” That statement is not Biblical and not true. Any doodling, coloring or writing in your Bible that encourages Bible Study is a plus, not a sin. Remember, the devil wants to keep you from believing, reading, studying and applying the truths in God’s Word.

How to Color-Code Your Bible is a fun way that will encourage your Bible study. Especially new Believers, can get confused, discouraged and even bored with Bible study if they do not have a system to their reading and studying the Scripture.

I am sure you have seen Bibles with pre-colored verses that are selected by the publisher. That takes a lot of fun out of finding and selecting verses that are meaningful to you. Authors, Alice Cullinan and Carolyn Sears have some fun and creative tips on how to create your own Bible color-coding system.

Color-Coding your Bible will help you identify words, phrases, verses, and even chapters that are meaningful to you. Their system helps you to separate topics and quickly identify themes that you are studying. They suggest colors for topics they have identified in their own Bible study and they suggest topics and verses to begin coding with your favorite colors to get you started such as: promises, prayer, Holy Spirit, second coming, witnessing and color-coding different Bible characters.

It was unfortunate that there were problems downloading this book. I had no difficulty purchasing the English version. This problem has been resolved and I encourage all to purchase this book. The concept of color-coding the Bible is not a new concept, as the author admits . I applaud Dr. Cullinan on taking color-coding to a more personal level. This book provides the reader with a step by step instruction (demonstrated by photos, examples, and suggestions) that is simple to understand while taking into account the imagination and creativity of the reader. If you are searching for ways to highlight your Bible you will not be disappointed with the endless possibilities that are presented in this book and for .99 who can pass this up?
