About the Author
Naomi Booth grew up in West Yorkshire. She read English at the University of Cambridge and completed a PhD in Creative and Critical Writing at the University of Sussex. Her short fiction has been published as part of Myriad Editions' Quick Fictions series. Her critical work has been published in New Formations and Textual Practice, and she is currently working on a monograph about swooning. Naomi lives in York and is a Lecturer in Literature and Creative Writing at York St John University.

Breathtakingly poetic...

How do you describe something that is indescribable? Something which has danced past the definition of perfection and elegance? This is what I asked myself once Booth had given me back my breath.

The Lost Art of Sinking is breathtakingly poetic, and yet underneath the feather-like prose rumbles something else. Something dark, like a storm looming off in the distance just beyond our reach. And just like Esther we arch our backs, let our heads hang back, and let every fiber of our existence melt away.

Within moments of beginning this exquisite piece of literature, I was lost. There was no me. No world. There was nothing but Booth’s sweet utterings to pull me along. Each sentence becoming more and more intoxicatingly addictive. Her words and I, we danced. And I didn’t want it to ever end, this story, this feeling. This feeling of absolute perfection. And yet I couldn’t force myself to stop. And even now, reminiscing, I want to jump back in and submerge myself. Get lost in the gorgeousness of it all forever.

The Lost Art of Sinking is about trying to find yourself in a crazy world, about the danger of obsessions and turning your back on your life and reality. About losing yourself completely. And Booth makes you feel, really feel this feeling of powerlessness against a stronger, darker force. And it sort of scares you, thinking about how Esther feels. Scares you even more when you feel what Esther feels.

This novella satiated a hunger living deep inside my soul, something which most full-length novels never come close to satisfying. This is a book to which I will return over the years. Whenever I need to be inspired. Whenever I want my heart to dance like it never danced before. I will return to Esther.

This book wasn’t too short or too long, too funny or too sad, too light or too dark. This book. A perfectly executed swoon.

Not a bad little book, More about life that sales, but ...

Here's my take on this book, it's more the author talking about life and what happens along the way. We get his back story, and how he got into sales. We learn about his motivators and how to apply them in our circumstances.

The major talk on cold calling doesn't come until the last chapter. Am I inspired to go knock doors, or hit the phones - I'm not sure.

Doesn't really matter, I took two gems from this book:

1) "If someone tells you they are perfect slap them because they are lying to you."

2) "Why do they put erasers on pencils? Erasers give you the opportunity to erase mistakes."

I know I'm going to keep those two quotes close by, and use them whenever I can. I can think of a few people I want to slap already.

It's short, well written, and entertaining. Might as well add it to your library.

Good Advice for a Tough Subject

I received a copy of this book from the author. I have over ten years experience in sales, I like his take on this subject. Cold caling is hard work. The author offers practical tips to help you strategize and put more money in your pocket.

I found this book interesting, smart, easy to read, and witty. I especially like chapters on keeping a sales journal and the salesman diet. This is a must read for anyone just getting in sales, starting a new business and/or looking to increase their income.

I'm handy but untrained, being self-taught in just about all matters d. i. y. This book gave me the ability to use and understand a multimeter, which, as all you better trained, or experienced, handypersons know, is a very useful skill.

What a waste of $3

What a waste of $3.00, and an e-book no less written by some amateur in the UK, using their English. I thought this would help me troubleshoot auto related issues, home appliance type issues, and generally simple electrical problems. Not measure a 9v battery, the value of a simple resistor, or test a light bulb.

Try finding a simple pamphlet or "REAL BOOK" on how to use a multi-meter, you know, something you can actually carry out to your car while you are troubleshooting it.

Let the buyer beware........

Snow Leopard Visual Guide with a little bit of MacBook thrown in

The title of this book and the editorial description are both lame. This is not a book about using (just) your MacBook - but, rather, a Snow Leopard-specific introduction to using any Mac. The only thing that is really MacBook specific - vs iMac or Mac Pro - is the brief illustration that shows what the various ports are.

This book is only for you if you have an Intel Mac running Snow Leopard (OS X 10.6).

Note, too, that every Mac comes with iLife, yet this book does not make mention of any of the iLife applications.

While beautifully laid out and illustrated with screen captures, the editorial content of the book seems to have not been reviewed by a Mac expert, as there are numerous issues throughout that are either awkward, or not appropriate for a typical user.

In the first pages, the author notes the use of context menus via clicking a right mouse button, but does not note that with certain Apple mice, the right button must be enabled in the System Preferences first. He then talks about control-clicking (the way to get a secondary click with a single / left mouse button) on the trackpad - and does not mention the more convenient trackpad methods until much later in Chapter 8.

He notes that folders can be dragged to the dock, but does not point out that they can only be dragged to the right side of the dock only. This is unfortunately typical of the almost-correct instructions throughout the book that a knowledgeable reviewer / editor might have helped smooth out.

On page 23, in a sidebar box called "Remember your Gestures!", Ray talks about four-finger swipe, etc., on the trackpad - but he does not introduce these until pages 213-214 in Chapter 8. Even there, they are not adequately described. Sort of hard to "remember" them on page 23 if you don't see it for another 200 pages.

Chapter 2 contains way too much information on extremely unusual network situations, breaking the flow of the whole book. Most of the content of this chapter belongs in an Appendix in my opinion. Much later, on page 150, Ray talks about sharing an internet connection in a way that most users would not understand ... or require.

Chapter 10 describes MobileMe backup before the more fundamental Time Machine backup.

The description of the keychain, which saves passwords, does not mention the importance of a secure login password to protect the (login) keychain. Describing Address Book, Ray implies that a name can only be a member of one group, not describing dragging into multiple groups and opt-clicking on a name to see which groups it belongs to. The description of displaying calendars in iCal is incorrect - suggesting that selecting a calendar displays its content, rather than checking the checkbox next to it.

The section on external monitors does not describe the designed-for-MacBook 24" Apple display or how to operate with the laptop lid closed and with the external monitor as the only active monitor.

The Time Machine pages do not describe at all how to restore files - or how Time Machine can intelligently recognize certain applications, such as Mail, iCal or Address Book and restore individual mail messages, addresses, etc.

So, after not describing fully or correctly many of the basics of using Snow Leopard, Ray then goes into describing how to access the LaunchDaemon lists to delete services, something that most users should stay far away from.

The description of installing a new hard drive (to replace the existing one) is unrealistic unless the drive is dead - suggesting that one reinstall Snow Leopard from the original installation disks. There is no mention of the more normal choices of (1) boot from the install disk and do a full restore from your Time Machine backup disk, or (2) attach the new disk via a USB or firewire cable and clone the old disk onto the new one before physical installation.

There is nothing in the book on how to burn data onto a CD or DVD via a Finder Burn Folder. There is no mention of how to create a zip file (via the Compress command in the file context menu).

In summary, a lot of good content that is beautifully displayed, however there are also a lot of errors and omissions and inappropriate material.

I am a new Mac user and find this book to be my "guide". The book is clearly written and has great illustrations that guide you through the various aspects of OS X. The index is complete which allows you to find specific topics.
