About the Author
Charles E. Thomas, Ph.D., is a professor and division chair at Lee College, where he teaches Process Technology, Safety Management, and Manufacturing Engineering. Widely regarded as the foremost textbook author on process technology, Dr. Thomas is credited with creating the discipline in the 1990s. His prior professional experience includes tenure with Exxon Research and Engineering and Exxon Chemicals in a variety of operational, research and development, and training system roles. He earned his B.A. from Western Illinois University, his M.S. from the University of Texas, and his Ph.D. from Texas A & M University.

Different wording is used between chapter readings and chapter reviews, which makes studying difficult. In effect an instructor can use either or both definitions when it comes to tests; so a student is forced to memorize more info then needed. Obvious typos in book. Including page 93 where an equation is listed as NPSHa $ NPSHr which does not matter until I get a test question where the instructor took this out of the book. Glossary is the only place to find the correct equation NPSHa > or = NPSHr . I expected more from a text with an engineer involved in its production.

Good value compared to the 3rd addition

The textbook is a very useful source of information for the subject matter it covers.

At the time of purchase, this edition (4th edition), was $30 cheaper than the previous edition (3rd edition), making this a good value. I was concerned that since my instructor is using the 3rd edition there might be inconsistencies between editions that would result in added difficulties following along with classwork. So far there have been no significant differences between editions. I will try to remember to update this review if I begin experiencing problems.

This book goes over quite a bit of equipment and systems. Honestly this review won't affect your purchase, as you probably need it for class anyways. Definitely would recommend the Kindle version as it is searchable and has other useful tools.

Best book to date on the emerging modern era of hallmarks beginning in the 19th century

As gallery expert for Jones & Horan watch and jewelry auctions, this beautifully organized text with superb renditions of marks that are illegible in other books has become instantly indispensable. Already I am solving mysteries daily. It is a must have for the professional and collector alike having anything to do with precious metals and all related objects. The project that created this book has others in progress, and needs the support of the community to bring them to fruition. I cannot give a higher recommendation.

Qu'on le veuille ou non, il y eut bel et bien une bataille le 13 septembre 1759 sur les plaines d'Abraham où l'audace de Wolfe l'emporta sur la précipitation de Montcalm.Quant au sort de la Nouvelle-France, il fut décidé trois ans plus tard à Paris, la France cédant pour de bon son gigantesque empire en Amérique du Nord pour deux petites iles aux Caraïbes. Mais cela est une autre histoire.

Dans son livre, "Quebec, 1759. The siege and the Battle." Charles Perry Stacey aborde son sujet avec toute la rigueur d'un historien militaire chevronné, écartant tout le romantisme qui déforme trop souvent cet épisode, pour se fier uniquement aux évènements tel qu'ils se sont passés ou du moins tel qu'ils sont documentés. À travers le prisme des deux généraux, Wolfe et Montcalm, les stratégies et les tactiques militaires et navales sont évaluées, compte tenu des forces disponibles, des armes utilisées, du ravitaillement, de la topographie, des conditions de navigation, des difficultés énormes d'un débarquement amphibie et de tout ce qui peut influencer une opération de cette envergure. D'après l'auteur, aucun de ces deux militaires n'avait l'envergure d'un grand général en chef, n'étant pas en mesure de bien évaluer tous ces éléments et de les exploiter à son profit.

Même si Montcalm dut partager son autorité militaire avec le Gouverneur Vaudreuil, ce qui créa de violentes tensions entre les deux, les troupes françaises ayant peu de respect pour la milice canadienne, il commit deux erreurs fatidiques. La première fut de ne pas assurer une solide défense de la Pointe de Lévis, permettant ainsi aux Anglais d'occuper cette position stratégique en face de Québec et d'entreprendre un bombardement systématique ravageant la basse ville et endommageant lourdement la haute ville. Mais ce qui est plus grave, cette position clé devait faciliter l'incursion des navires de guerre anglais en amont de Québec. Ce déplacement menaçait directement la ligne de ravitaillement de Québec et plus tard devait permettre le débarquement à l'Anse au Foulon. Et la seconde erreur fut d'engager beaucoup trop rapidement le combat sur les plaines d'Abraham, sans attendre l'arrivée de Bougainville avec les meilleures troupes françaises (3000 soldats réguliers) qui étaient à Cap-Rouge, soit à trois heures de marche.

De son côté, Wolfe qui n'avait que 32 ans, s'avéra un commandant indécis et faible sur le plan stratégique. Après avoir essuyé une sérieuse défaite sur la côte de Beauport, il s'entêta à vouloir reprendre cette attaque sans chercher d'alternative. C'est son propre état-major avec l'aide du vice-amiral qui lui ouvrit les yeux en proposant un débarquement amphibie en aval de Québec. Cette manoeuvre avait pour but de couper complètement le ravitaillement et de forcer Montcalm à sortir de sa position défensive. Et encore là, Wolfe hésita et opta finalement pour le site de débarquement le plus dangereux. Malgré tout, la chance et quelques négligences du coté français aidant, et surtout grâce à la grande expérience de la marine anglaise, 3200 hommes étaient débarqués et en formation de combat sur les plaines d'Abraham. Ce jour là, le 13 septembre 1759. à dix heures du matin, en quelques minutes, le tout était joué et l'armée française entrait dans les fortifications de Québec en déroute.

C.P. Stacey publia son livre en 1959 à l'occasion du deux centième anniversaire du siège et de la bataille de Québec. Son récit de cette célèbre opération militaire et navale demeure encore le plus complet et le plus juste. Une deuxième édition revisée parut en 2002 contenant de nombreuses annexes, notamment l'ordre de bataille et la puissance des forces militaires et navales française et anglaise. En plus, on retrouve un article fort intéressant sur le rôle déterminant joué par la marine de guerre britannique. Le fleuve St.-Laurent était et est toujours considéré comme un des cours d'eau les plus difficiles et dangereux au monde. Les Anglais et les colons américains avaient tous en mémoire les naufrages subis lors des tentatives d'invasion de Phips et de Walker. Le fleuve était à l'époque la meilleure défense de la Nouvelle-France. Sans aucune carte de navigation et connaissance du fleuve, une flotte d' invasion comprenant 49 navires de guerre et 140 bateaux de ravitaillement se regroupa au Bic pour s' aventurer avec la plus grande prudence jusqu'à l'Ile aux Coudres pour ensuite se présenter devant Québec; et cela malgré le jeu des puissantes marées et l'inversion du courant, les vents dominants contraires à ce type de voiliers,et tous les écueils. Déjà cette manoeuvre était toute une prouesse. Mais le débarquement amphibie à l'Anse au Foulon, relève vraiment de l'exploit. Cette opération mobilisa 83 embarcations, dont les fameuses barques de débarquement à fond plat manoeuvrées par 16 à 20 rameurs et pouvant transporter de 50 à 70 soldats. En pleine nuit, le baissant de la marée entrainant un courant pouvant atteindre 8 noeuds (environ 15 km/h), dans le silence complet, évitant les écueils, une armée complète de 3200 hommes fut débarquée en moins de quatre heures. Un véritable tour de force qui rappelle d'une certaine façon le débarquement en Normandie quelque 200 ans plus tard. C'est à se demander si le succès de l'invasion, du siège et de la bataille de Québec ne revient pas plutôt à la marine britannique sous le commandement du Vice-Amiral Charles Saundres. Pour les lecteurs avertis, la dernière édition de 2006 contient également la bibliographie la plus complète sur le sujet. Pour les autres, comme moi, ce livre demeure la meilleure façon de comprendre en 2009 ce qui s'est vraiment passé à Québec en 1759, 250 ans plus tôt.

I read the book in one sitting, finding it to be well written and fast paced. After a recent vacation in Quebec, I decided to order the book to read again. Although it took two sittings to read it a second time, I found it to be just as good as the first time. Furthermore, the latest edition with additional maps, diagrams, pictures and comment by Donald Graves makes it even more informative and descriptive. This book is highly recomended for a thoughtful and informed knowledge of the events in Quebec in 1759.
