Python has a handful of open source libraries for numerical computations involving optimization, linear algebra, integration, interpolation, and other special functions using array objects, machine learning, data mining, and plotting. Pandas have a productive environment for data analysis. These libraries have a specific purpose and play an important role in the research into diverse domains including economics, finance, biological sciences, social science, health care, and many more. The variety of tools and approaches available within Python community is stunning, and can bolster and enhance visual story experiences.

This book offers practical guidance to help you on the journey to effective data visualization. Commencing with a chapter on the data framework, which explains the transformation of data into information and eventually knowledge, this book subsequently covers the complete visualization process using the most popular Python libraries with working examples. You will learn the usage of Numpy, Scipy, IPython, MatPlotLib, Pandas, Patsy, and Scikit-Learn with a focus on generating results that can be visualized in many different ways. Further chapters are aimed at not only showing advanced techniques such as interactive plotting; numerical, graphical linear, and non-linear regression; clustering and classification, but also in helping you understand the aesthetics and best practices of data visualization. The book concludes with interesting examples such as social networks, directed graph examples in real-life, data structures appropriate for these problems, and network analysis.

By the end of this book, you will be able to effectively solve a broad set of data analysis problems.

Dissapointing
By Luis Miguel Soares
I am giving 2 stars to this review because I assume that the author spent a lot of time writing it and there somewhere buried in the book there are some good ideas. However I doubt that this book was professionally edited and having Packt charge more than 50 dollars for this is an outrage. The book is a big mess, there is no flow in the subjects presented, even inside the same chapter there are conceptual leaps that make the reading feel like a roller coaster with basic notions interspersed with advanced algorithms. Take the chapter on Bioinformatics most of the material is about graphs and analysis of social networks, I agree that social networks are a good introduction to graphs but I doubt they can be classified as bioinformatics (in the bioinformatics there is something else that bothers me, they use code from another book's examples file without properly citing the other work, I assume they actually asked permission to the authors but I still think is a little bit shady). Even if you try to focus on the book, it becomes impossible since it is riddled with misplaced code, random phrases that are also misplaced, page filler of installation logs that contribute nothing and errors (on page 285 does that graph correspond to the code? is it even a valid graph?). Overall I kept putting the book down in frustration from all the hurdles. I am sorry for the author but I cannot recommend this version of the book.

Liked a lot, it's inspiring, discipline-agnostic, but a bit hard and lacking specifics and some order.
By yoalieh
I liked this book, though it's not easy to be loved.

I'd liked the introduction a lot, as the author talked about data visualization as a discipline, and gave some tips and ideas of diferent kind of visualizations (There's is a lot more than graph bars and scatterplots it seems, ;) ). It tries to be discipline-agnostic by using many real life examples from many disciplines. I think this can bring inspiration when in need of a way to present information hard to explain.

After that, when talking about Python, it gives an overview about Python versions and libraries which can simplify the process of creating good visualizations. Finally, almost all examples are based in Conda, but still other things are used. This can cause a bit of confussion, but I see it as one of the potential of this book, as it can be used as reference to create good visualizations in different workflows, and serves as a reference about which libraries can be used for a special kind of visualization if it's not covered by one of them.

The examples in further chapters are very good, and I loved when it talks about Numpy, simulation, or advanced data structures, all of which can be used to create better visualization, or even the part talking about drawing graphs.

Don't expect this book to be a cookbook, it's more like a big notebook of a professional in charge of creating a LOT of visualizations for different fields. I think it lacks a bit of more explaining on some specfic examples or libraries, but that would require a lot more books to fit them. Also, a very good level of Python understanding, and documentation for each library in use is not only recommended, but a must.

Great ideas but the path to application isn't always clear
By Amazon Customer
[Disclaimer: Packt Publishing asked me to review the book in light of my Github public profile. I was given complete editorial freedom and NOT compensated in anyway for the review however]

Overall, I enjoyed this book, although I suspect it's real value will become apparent when I return to it over the next few years when faced with visualising tricky datasets. Broadly, Kirthi Raman covers three areas: Introducing visualisation as an activity itself (he considers it a form of story telling), several Python tools for visualisation and analytic techniques that can drive the visualisation/modelling process. I particularly like that a plethora of approaches are encouraged, so that if you find one isn’t suited to what you’re doing, there are always plenty other to consider. As someone who uses Python on a daily basis to both model and visualise a variety of data sources, Raman's book is an important addition to my professional library.

Where I find the book lacking is in providing a clear path to applying the array of techniques and packages suggested. To be clear, there are good code examples for almost every visualisation/analytic technique (the financial models are particularly well explained), but I would have liked more explanation/worked examples of going from a raw dataset to a professional visualisation.

Another minor criticism is that it is quite ambitious in its scope (there are whole journals devoted to some of the modelling techniques covered in a few pages), but by making the reader aware of these approaches, the reader can always read further.

To end on a practical note, I like that the publisher makes the book available in multiple formats, including Kindle and DRM-free PDF. This is very practical for reading (and using) the book over multiple devices. I would recommend a colour display though, so as to enjoy the full effect of the many visualisation examples.

This is not an "art book," though many amazing works of art can be found in it. It is about the role in the Italian Renaissance of the "studiolo".... On every page we are drawn into the society in which great art was made... -- The New York Times Book Review, John Russell

Saturate: Being Disciples of Jesus in the Everyday Stuff of Life, by Jeff Vanderstelt

What does it look like to live for Jesus in the everyday stuff of life?

Many Christians have unwittingly embraced the idea that “church” is a once-a-week event rather than a community of Spirit-empowered people; that “ministry” is what pastors do on Sundays rather than the 24/7 calling of all believers; and that “discipleship” is a program rather than the normal state of every follower of Jesus.

Drawing on his experience as a pastor and church planter, Jeff Vanderstelt wants us to see that there’s more—much more—to the Christian life than sitting in a pew once a week. God has called his people to something bigger: a view of the Christian life that encompasses the ordinary, the extraordinary, and everything in between.

Packed full of biblical teaching, compelling stories, and real-world advice, this book will remind you that Jesus is filling the world with his presence through the everyday lives of everyday people...

People just like you.

Review

“I’ve always been grateful for Jeff Vanderstelt’s heart for discipleship. Rather than drawing people to himself, he labors to help others understand the power they possess in the Spirit. He does what all good leaders should do: spends his days equipping others to do the work of the ministry.”
—Francis Chan, New York Times best-selling author, Crazy Love and Forgotten God

“Saturate is a compelling and biblically serious picture of Jesus and the mission he has given his people. It is a book that is deeply doctrinal and helpfully applicable. I have known Jeff to faithfully live out the philosophies of life and day-to-day ministry contained in these pages, and have watched firsthand as God produced much fruit. I pray it encourages you.”
—Matt Chandler, Lead Pastor, The Village Church, Dallas, Texas; President, Acts 29 Church Planting Network; author, The Mingling of Souls

“Jeff is one of the smartest, most dedicated, and most interesting disciple-makers I know. In this book, and through the medium of his life story, he effectively passes on the key insights that make him one of the best movement leaders in the country. Saturate is a winner.”
—Alan Hirsch, Founder, Forge and Future Travelers; award winning author, Untamed, Right Here Right Now, and ReJesus

“If someone were to ask me where to go to learn about discipleship, I would hand them the Bible along with Jeff Vanderstelt’s book Saturate. Readers will find themselves taking a survey of their lives, seeing the areas that God desires to take captive for his glory. Whether you are a preacher, homemaker, small-group leader, high school student, or new convert, Saturate will spur you on to live a life that will influence others to know Jesus while growing people in Jesus, not just at church, but in all of life.”
—Jackie Hill Perry, poet; writer; hip-hop artist

“This is a thought-provoking, heart-warming account of a body of believers taking God’s call to live as family seriously. Don’t allow yourself to be distracted by the details or quibble with the incidentals. This book challenges and encourages all of us to intentionally live on mission in the mundane details and events of everyday life.”
—Steve Timmis, Executive Director, Acts 29 Church Planting Network

“Jeff Vanderstelt uses an ordinary experience to give us extraordinary insight into what it means to be a disciple of Jesus. Saturate is a great challenge to all of us to stop doing church and be the church!”
—Dave Ferguson, Lead Pastor, Community Christian Church, Naperville, Illinois; Lead Visionary, NewThing

“In Saturate, Jeff Vanderstelt endeavors to provide Christians with an image of God’s grace that is all-encompassing and inescapable. Whether you are new to the faith or a seasoned believer, Jeff’s words will encourage you and focus God’s gospel on every facet of your life. This book will challenge the way you see your Savior, your mission, and your everyday life.”
—Ed Stetzer, Billy Graham Distinguished Chair for Church, Mission, and Evangelism, Wheaton College

“Jeff Vanderstelt’s passion and commitment to the fame of Jesus are as evident in this book as they are in his preaching. It was so refreshing to read chapter after chapter that lifted high the name of Jesus and to be challenged to do the same more and more in my life and ministry.”
—Matt Carter, Pastor of Preaching, The Austin Stone Community Church, Austin, Texas; co-author, The Real Win

“Saturate is a crucially needed and down-to-earth manual for what is most important—loving God and loving neighbors. What Christian wouldn’t want to know what Jeff Vanderstelt has brilliantly and helpfully given us here?”
—Jared C. Wilson, Director of Content Strategy, Midwestern Baptist Theological Seminary

Idealistic or Realistic? I wasn't sure at first, but he won me over, Enjoy!
By William D. Curnutt
First of all I would like to thank Crossway Publishers and Net Galley for making a review copy of this book available to me, at no cost, in exchange for a review.

Jeff Vanderstelt is a former youth Pastor with Willow Creek Church and now a church planting Pastor in Tacoma, Washington. This book is his first and is a description of his spiritual walk and to some degree his spiritual awakening to how the Christian life should be lived and how Discipleship should take place.

As the book started I thought it was a bit over the top and I wasn’t sure that I was going to like it very much. In his introduction he states, “Can you imagine every city, every neighborhood, every street, and every house saturated with Jesus’s presence through his people? What if, in every school, every classroom, and every extracurricular activity, students daily experience the person and work of Jesus? And can you dream with me of a day when no business office, retail center, or industrial hub can get away from the good news of Jesus proclaimed in words and expressed in gracious deeds? A day when every cafĂ©, pub, restaurant, or bakery smells of the aroma of Christ? This is God’s intention for this world. And his plan is to do it through his people.”

I thought that was a bit idealistic given how our culture is and how there is such a distain for Christ and His church. So I thought here is another idealistic young person whom needs a reality check! But as I continued on with the book I appreciated his enthusiasm and his concepts.

But, as I read more of the book I found that I understood where he was coming from and I found that I agreed with him on more and more points.

Since I am working with a church plant group that is operating the same way that Pastor Vanderstelt is with his “Missional” church plant I appreciated his major points of how we are to live with Jesus as the central focus of our daily lives and that we should be so immersed and filled by the Spirit that everyone around us will see Jesus and see how Jesus wants to influence our culture and influence each person’s life, for the better.

This book is a compilation of stories about peoples changed lives and how Discipleship played an important role in each of those changes.

For those who know Christ and understand their Bible fairly well this book will seem like just a reminder of how we should be living our lives. But then again it has some radical thoughts, according the many, about how to Disciple others within their church community.

This will be an encouraging read for laypeople and pastors as well who are wanting to think through how living in the community of Christ and discipling others might look with some new emphasis on boldly living out our commitment to Christ.

Being Disciples Everywhere
By Dr Conrade Yap
This book is about ordinary Christianity being put into practice in everyday life. It is for imperfect people trying to do something good in this world. It is about believers wanting to obey the Word of God. It is about discipleship in simple terms. It is also about putting theory into practice, where theology's rubber hits the road of discipleship. Jeff Vanderstelt, lead pastor of Doxa Church in Bellevue, WA in confessing that he dislikes writing, has decided to publish the book because of a vision in Habbakuk 2:14, "For the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the LORD as the waters cover the sea." He believes that it is possible for every believer to practice discipleship in a way that saturates the world they live in with Christ's love and influence. Presenting his idea in four frames of thought, he begins by mentioning the idea of church not as an event or program but a lifestyle of hospitality. People want to be participants and not mere spectators. Opportunities need to be given to such people to contribute. It is better to be a fisherman instead of watching people fish. He goes back to Jesus' willingness to meet people where they are, at weddings, parties, houses, and ordinary places. It is not the religious events that matter but all the ordinary activities through the day. His vision of church is essentially the people of God living together on a mission in everyday living. Church does not end in a Church service on Sunday. It begins on Sunday and Church happens in everyday living through the rest of the week.

Part Two is about how Jesus lived it. Instead of going straight into the perfect life of Jesus, Vanderstelt begins with the brokenness of the world as well as a reminder that we are not Jesus. Only Jesus is Jesus. We cannot save the world. Only Jesus can. Our starting point is not good works. Our starting point is believing and trusting Jesus. We have been saved from sin, so there is no need to work for our own salvation. It is ok to be broken. It is ok to be weak. God uses such people to do his work. We can only saturate the world in the manner that Jesus is leading us to. It begins from the inside out. It is trusting that God will make us better in his time.

Part Three builds upon the faith in Christ as the cornerstone of our lives. Like Christ emanating from the center of our hearts, we are to live out our faith in every place and in everything. Like the fishermen disciples who trusted in Jesus, they went on to preach the gospel everywhere they went. It is what Vanderstelt calls "all-of-life discipleship." It stems from a growing life of obedience to the Word. Reading it is not enough. It needs practice. It needs obedience. Only then will there be growth. Learn to supplement the Sunday teachings with personal feeding. Three key environments are described.

1) Life on Life: This is essentially about authenticity, to be open and honest about ourselves, that the beauty of Christ will flow freely from inside us without any need for pretensions. It is unlimited grace of God flowing out of us.
2) Life in Community: Remembering that our sin hurts people, we need to learn accountability to one another. We are all members of the body of Christ. Through a community, we learn, we share, and we grow.
3) Life on Mission: Using the example of a doctor trained many years to deal with health matters of life and death, our mission too is about learning to share spiritual matters that deal with matters of life present, life future, and life past. Our mission often shapes us. Like people on a mission trip who felt purposeful and equipped, life in everyday society can also be like that. It is living as broken and imperfect people; constantly shaped and equipped; and living out life in society in the power of the Spirit.

In Part Four, Vanderstelt gradually comes back from the 'doing' of discipleship to the 'being' of discipleship. Our identity is in Christ, shaped by the community we live in, baptized in the Name of the Father, serving in the Name of the Son; and Baptized in the Name of the Holy Spirit. He shares stories of everyday faith to encourage readers. Stories like the how they have accepted and loved Nicki, devastated by a broken marriage and a tragic second marriage, and be treated as part of the author's family. Stories of inner healing from plain care and concern in Christ's love. Stories of how Clay came back to life after much prayer and intercession.

Part Five is about everyday examples which many readers ought to be able to identify with. We can live as Christian disciples in at least six areas of life: 1) Eating; 2) Listening; 3) Storying; 4) Blessing; 5) Celebrating; 6) Re-Creating. We remember the path to living as disciple begins in Christ, like how the disciples started their journey in the boat. We clarify our mission. We form a plan. We saturate the world.

For a first time author, Vanderstelt does a good job in putting simple concepts in everyday language using everyday examples. The book will appeal to the layperson as it is devoid of heavy theological jargon. It speaks plainly the gospel truth of beginning in Christ for everything we do. It touches on the way that we live Church instead of always saying "we go to church." He reminds us that at the end of the worship service each Sunday essentially means the beginning of our living out our testimony in the world. Sometimes, believers will hesitate about living their faith in the marketplace using excuses like:

- "I don't know how?"
- "No one has taught me."
- "I have never been discipled at all."
- "What should I do?"
- and so on ...

Do not fret. Like a fresh graduate from school, one needs to start somewhere. The first steps may be hard, but once it is taken in faith, we depend on the Holy Spirit to lead and to guide us. The trouble with many people is that we allow our doubts of ourselves overwhelm the opportunities presented before us. We shirk back under the cloak of unpreparedness or ill-equipped reasons. The truth is, we are never going to be fully trained as culture and contexts change all the time. Practicing our faith in the school of life may very well be the best and only way to go. There is a time for everything. For many of us, especially those who have been going to church for years, perhaps, Vanderstelt's book is a call for us to take the plunge to being disciples everywhere we go in everything we do.

Everyday Discipleship
By J. P. Stevens
Jeff Vanderstelt’s book Saturate focuses on how we can live our everyday in a way that is saturated with Jesus. He writes about this because Jesus filled lives lead to changed communities. People shouldn't only hear about Jesus, they need to see how his followers live in the world. Jeff asks, “Can you imagine every city, every neighborhood, every street, and every house saturated with Jesus’s presence through his people?” And later he writes, “This vision is Jesus saturation—every man, woman, and child in every place having a daily encounter with Jesus through words spoken and deeds done through his people.” The goal of Saturate is to show us how living as a follower of Jesus in our every day lives will open up the doors for everyday discipleship.

I think one of the most intimidating charges from Jesus is to go and make disciples. This sounds like a daunting task where we have to explain to people every detail of theology and tell them every reason why they should believe in Jesus. Instead, it should be a natural occurrence. As we live for Jesus though the work of the spirit, people should notice something different about us. He writes, “Live in such a way that it would demand a ‘Jesus explanation.’ In other words, you wouldn’t be able to explain what you do or why without needing to talk about Jesus.” Living a Jesus saturated life will naturally lead to Jesus being shared with your neighbors. You just can help it.

I know that Jeff and the people in his book aren’t perfect people, but they get what it means to be saturated. When they have a problem, when they seem different from the world, or when someone comes to them with a problem the answer is Jesus. Not Jesus in a cheesy way, but in a way that the Gospel of Jesus can change your every day life. In a way that Jesus and his ways are better and will lead to a more whole and healthy life. This is what’s at the heart of Saturate and even if that’s all there was in this book, it would be worth the read. However, there’s so much more to Jeff’s book, and you really need to take the time to dive into it. I would highly encourage you to pick up this book and explore what a Jesus saturated life looks like. It’s something that I try to describe here on my blog and something I hope to embody in my life. I pray that this is something that the church can really live out so we can embody this idea of Jesus saturation.
