Listening in the Language Classroom

I think this book is useful in that it provides insights into the current teaching approaches in the L2 listening classroom. It compares the differences of language processing between L1 and L2 listeners --- how they decode, link to their schemata, use grammar, amplify what the speaker says and handle information etc. It is consequently useful to L2 listening researchers because it releases incoming information not only about the author --- Dr. John Field, but also other wellknown scholars in the circle.
The book also provides criteria of listening difficulty and detailed teaching techniques that L2 listening teachers can apply in their language classroom. It is a practical book.

It started a little slow for me - preaching to the choir about the current state of teaching listening. However, the ideas, activities, and citations throughout are extremely informative. I am in the midst of revamping a speaking/listening course for advanced English learners and have found this book invaluable.

Brilliant book on a mesmerising art

Like James Ernst, I got hooked on the idea of contact juggling before I knew there was a name for it, and by the same movie, Labyrinth. Most of the book is about the basics and some more sophisticated contact juggling, but at the end, there is a basic tutorial on traditional juggling, plate spinning, Devil Sticks, and more.

The author walks you through the techniques with detailed instructions and text, and provides instructions so good that you really could learn from the book (with much perserverence).

This book and a three inch ball can start you down an absolutely habit-forming path to entertain others and yourself. Big fun!

Easy read

I bought this for my grandson along with the SIL-X Contact Ball Orange. He had always wanted the Fushigi Ball but after much research I went with these. Now I want him to give it back because it is quite fun and I actually want to learn. It takes practice and patience, so if you don't have these it might be best to pick out another activity.

This is my favorite book, it helps walk you through exactly anything that you may go through on the school grounds. It basically dumbs everything down for you to understand everything perfectly.

A classic resource with good insoght!

I have used this book as a resource for 10 years and it still holds its value! There are brief chapters about a wide variety of painful/difficult events that can happen to young children, including things like sexual assault, death of a parent, Hiv/AIDS of child or family member, divorce, poverty, etc. Each chapter gives a brief summary of how the young child may be affected by the trauma, discusses possibloe systoms or behaviors you may observe, and then offers practical advice in how to support the child process the event and get support. Because it is an older text, some of the book and video recommendations to share with children are no longer available or are now out of print. However, many are classic books that you can still find, and the advice is sound and simple. It doesn't go deep--but is meant to offer quick insight and support for the parent, teacher, or caregiver who needs to support a child who has undergone some type of crisis, and it does it well!

Using this translation, along with one's favorite English translation and cross checking frequently with my Word for Word should presumably deepen one's understanding.

Very useful for the right reason...

This word for word translation was clearly a labor of love. Thank you, Mr. Abbott. First let me say what this ebook is and what it isn't. And who would benefit from it and who would not.

The book contains a translation, followed by a line by line word list in English, followed by the Chinese in simplified characters (I think?) and Pinyin romanization. The formatting is nicely rendered on a Fire HDX.

The translation ought not be used alone. As the author states, it is the product of his studying the text over years, not the work of a scholar. The word list, keyed to the lines, is (for me) merely adequate. It glosses the vocabulary and grammar and orients you to this and other translations. The Chinese is the primary value of the book.

I am reading The Philosophy of the Daodejing by Hans-Georg Moeller, Columbia University Press. As he analyzes a passage I look it up in this book and highlight it. Then I use the Chinese characters to check the parallelism, which is often missing in many English translations. Finally I use the Pinyin to get some sense of the rhyming structure and look up some key words in the Pleco Chinese dictionary. Both the Moeller and the Pleco are highly recommended.

There is no perfect translation, especially of a work like this. Knowing the Pinyin and recognizing the major characters and structures helps you compare translations. And comparing many translations helps you delve more deeply into ancient Chinese thought. Which is illuminating, interesting, and fun.

This book helps greatly in that enterprise. Thanks again.

Useful. Provides information about web sites that provide supporting or alternate interpretations of each Chinese word symbol and other translators who provide alternate interpretations. Abbott's interpretations often provide food for thought.

Great introduction to the KR perspective

Dr. Markman takes the reader on a tour of the different theoretical models that cognitive science researchers have used to try to represent knowledge content and the thinking processes that operate upon it. This is a nice introduction to the knowledge representation perspective within cognitive science, and it prepares the reader for a more in-depth venture into one or more of the topics covered. Graduate students and others will have an easy time with Dr. Markman's writing style, and important work is cited throughout. If you're interested in knowledge representation, this is a good way to get started.

This is a wonderfully clear instructive book on how to do hand lettering on ANYTHING. It's really great. I would highly recommend it for those of you who want to do some lettering on ANYTHING. This not only gives you ideas, it shows you HOW to make the lettering; even has practice pages. Reminded me of how I learned to write as a child. Very simple and EXCELLENT.

The prewar education system in Japan was formulated in the 1870s and modeled after the Western system of public education. After World War II, the American Occupation authorities attempted to reform this system further, but how much discontinuity with the past was produced by the postwar reforms is still an open question.Of course, the dilemmas facing Japanese schools are endemic to all modern school systems, and Marshall’s broad historical survey provides a valuable case study of Japanese attempts to strike a balance between equality and excellence, individual creativity and team cooperation, standardization and innovation, and internationalism and cultural identity. The book thus provides a valuable historical perspective on contemporary American issues of “political correctness” such as gender and ethnicity.As we head toward the “Pacific Century,” this book gives readers the background and insight necessary to make informed judgments about the relative strength of Japanese education and the merits of various school reforms.

I enjoyed the book. It was well written and obviously well researched.
I like the way it had info from personal writtings from the time, also.

I enjoyed the gallery of pictures included in the text, as well.

I will probably read the book at least one more time.

Reads more like a novel than a biography

I was somewhat reluctant to first start reading The Lonely Empress because, from the some of the biographies I've read (but certainly not all!), they tend to start out interesting but then become dull and boring. It usually takes a talented author to write a biography on a boring royal. But even an unskilled author would have no trouble about sounding fascinating if their subject matter was Elisabeth of Austria.

Born a mere daughter of a duke in Bavaria, Elisabeth had a fairytale (ish) romance. The emperor of Austria, Francis Joseph, was already engaged to Elisabeth's sister Helen when he fell in love with her. All of a sudden, to everyone's surprise, the Emperor started to rant about the grace and beauty of this younger sister, much to the dismay of his mother, the archduchess Sophie, who thought that Helen would become the perfect empress.

Elisabeth was still a child when she became engaged to the Emperor. Suddenly, she wasn't allowed to run wild, like she had been when she was younger. Elisabeth had been known to skip her lessons and go out riding for hours. She inherited her father's peculiarity and was known to be her happiest when surrounded by less than royal people. Her father, Duke Max, was renowned for his strangeness. He was known to travel the Bavarian countryside to escape his duties and delighted in circuses. The poor Duchess Ludovica, Elisabeth's mother, must have had a terrible time with her daughter and equally childish husband. Because of her strangeness and wild country ways, the Viennese court look down upon Elisabeth.

What makes this book more interesting is how the author has portrayed Elisabeth. She doesn't try to make her into a selfish, spoiled woman yet she doesn't spend the whole book describing her flawless beauty. Elisabeth seems to be a difficult topic to write about. As many people who have met the Empress say about her throughout the book, "She could be quite charming when she wanted to be. Yet she could also become cold and haughty."

Elisabeth has you admiring her at times, like when she tries to help the Hungarian people regain their Constitution, and at other times hating her, the way she treated her husband and children, the woman whose husband spent fortunes building her three homes around Europe and who still wasn't grateful or satisfied. This woman traveled to countries far away so she could escape her duties as an Empress and her husband.

But one feels for Elisabeth at how much misfortune she had dealt with in her life. She seems to be a caged bird, she seems to have those natures that cannot be trapped or caged. She needed wide spaces so she can spread her wings. The author portrayed Elisabeth excellently and made the book an enjoyable read.

Well written biography of Sissi

Prior to visiting Vienna last summer, I hadn't known much about Elizabeth of Austria or Sissi as she was often called. Seeing Schonbrunn and the Hofburg made me curious to learn more about her, and this book certainly makes for interesting reading. The author provides details not only about Elizabeth and her family, but also about the politics of the day. Elizabeth comes across as a study in contrasts: on the one hand, she could be very charming and gracious, on the other hand she appears to have been fundamentally self-centered and unsuited for the duties of an Empress. Wrapped up in her own pursuits, obsessed by the thought of gaining weight, growing old and losing her beauty, she was restless, possessive and prone to depression. At the end of the book, I felt much more sympathy for the Emperor Franz Joseph who loved Sissi to her dying day, despite the many separations he endured that were caused by her constant wandering around Europe and despite her unwillingness or inability to perform the duties traditionally expected of an Empress. Overall, this is a well-written biography, and my only caveat would be that Haslip sometimes makes allusions, for example regarding Elizabeth's illness, that are not fully explained which can be frustrating for the reader.

Fort-Dimanche, Fort-La-Mort En 1996, avec la première édition de Fort-Dimanche, Fort-la Mort, Patrick Lemoine a bouleversé la société haïtienne, tant en Haïti que dans sa diaspora, par le témoignage poignant de ses années passées dans les geôles de Fort-Dimanche, sous le régime de Jean-Claude Duvalier. Son cri déchirant a fait l'unanimité : d'un réalisme tétanisant, ce livre ose témoigner ce que d'autres ont seulement suggéré. Il témoigne de la descente aux enfers d'un être humain qui, loin de régresser à l'état de bête humaine, démontre la capacité hors du commun d'un homme à faire face à l'adversité et à l'horreur tout en luttant pour conserver sa dignité. N'ayant rien à envier aux grands romans témoignages tels que, «Au nom de tous les miens» de Martin Gray ou «Papillon» d'Henri Charrière, Fort-Dimanche, Fort-la-Mort, est de nos jours d'une violence physique et psychologique presqu'insoutenable et encoré éprouvante. Tout(e) Haïtien(ne) devrait lire cet ouvrage, en particulier, après le retour impromptu et choquant en Haïti de l'ex-dictateur Jean-Claude Duvalier, le 16 janvier 2011. Retour surprise, en toute impunité et à la barbe de toutes ses victimes et de leurs familles. Nous saluons donc la 4ème édition de cet ouvrage de mémoire incontournable dans notre vie collective de peuple. Plus que jamais, Fort-Dimanche, Fort-la-Mort doit être lu voire relu notamment par la jeunesse haïtienne qui n`a pas connu la dictature des Duvalier. Il faut le faire,non seulement pour ne jamais oublier les horreurs du passé mais, surtout, pour mieux appréhender l`avenir en cette année électorale cruciale où un potentiel populisme néoduvaliériste pointe ''triomphalement'' à lhorizon. Que cet ouvrage puisse nous inspirer, enfi n, à choisir des dirigeants dignes de ce nom, pouvant rétablir la dignité du peuple haïtien et aider à construire son avenir après le séisme dévastateur du 12 janvier 2010. Ce livre a lui seul devrait suffir pour traduire en justice Duvalier, ses assassins et ses militaires tonton macoutes, responsables non seulement de la souffrance et de la disparition de milliers d'haitiens innocents, mais aussi de la perte de tous les cerveaux et intellectuels Haitiens qui auraient permis a ce pays d'avancer au lieu de reculer sans cesse comme nous le faisons depuis plus de 50 ans.
Desole Mr Lemoine pour tout ce que vous avez endure, mais tout Haitien aujourd'hui devrait lire votre livre. Bravo pour votre grand Courage et Merci pour ce dechirant temoignage!!

WOW! Great book, captivating, depicts a harsh reality that many had to endure, under this despotic regime. Haiti changed a lot since the days of Duvalier and Fort-Dimanche. Nonetheless, If you want a harsh reminder of the atrocities that were perpetrated, the lives and families ruined by Duvalier's dictatorship, I encourage you to read this book.
