Essential for the .NET developer

Windows Forms Programming in C# doesn't disappoint.
The book quickly dives into the basics of form development, layout and resources. Even though the topic is somewhat introductory to someone who's done a lot of Windows Form development, the book is written in such a way that there was several times still found myself learning something new. I particularly enjoyed the chapters on drawing, there's always something interesting to be found when working with GDI+.
200 pages later, I found myself in a chapter that discusses a topic that you rarely see in any Windows programming book - Printing. This chapter is worth the price of the book alone to have it on your shelf as a reference guide. You won't find a more detailed coverage of printing anywhere else.
While I could go on and on about each individual chapter, I wanted to point out one that I particularly found helpful - Chapter 14 on Multithreaded User Interfaces. I had originally read part of this in an MSDN article, and was looking forward to the full content - and wasn't disappointed: Asynchronous operations, Safety and Multithreading, Callbacks (synchronous and asynchronous), etc. are all covered.
Anyways, I could go on and on - there are plenty of tasty .NET morsels in here to keep both the novice and experienced developer consumed with this book.

This book is out of date

No where in the title, cover or product description does it explain that this covers a very old version of Windows Forms programming that is no longer relevant today. I had not looked for the publication date when choosing this book (silly me). The author put the manuscript to bed in April 2003 and the book was published in September of 2003.

If you are completely new to Windows Forms, realize that this book was written to about Visual Studio 2003 .NET standards. Huge changes have been made to Visual Studio and .NET since then (major revision being Visual Studio 2005 and 2008).

When you read the assorted reviews here on Amazon, you'll note that most reviews are dated around 2004 or so.

This book should be fully updated to a new edition or taken off the market. Being six years old, and with .NET and Visual Studio both having undergone several revisions since then, this book has limited relevancy in 2009. I regret that I purchased this book.

Best Windows Forms book I've read!

Before buying Chris's book, a friend recommended another book as the best C# WinForms book, so I bought that one. It was my second one on this subject. I didn't find anything useful in it, and I almost concluded that all WinForms books were going to be worthless for me.
However, I still needed some good answers to WinForms questions, and resources such as the newsgroups weren't giving them to me. So I bought this book and a few others as a last effort to find intelligent coverage of this topic. Chris Sell's book totally changed my opinion of WinForms books -- Chris has shown that it is possible to cover this subject the way Troelsen covered an introduction to C# (Troelsen's book was voted best .NET book in the world, btw.)
This is a highly useful book full of intelligent information. It covers the basics, but also provides depth and detail.
I'm a good C# programmer, but I have done very little with WinForms. This was definitely the book I needed. I really think it is the right book for almost any level of WinForms experience. There are good tips in here that will benefit experienced WinForms developers. For example, I've seen smart people debate certain WinForms issues on the newsgroups in lengthy threads, without a clear resolution -- one quick read of a section in Chris's book could have clarified and resolved the issue(s). For every topic like this that I needed to understand, Chris took me from the basics to a full and in-depth understanding.
(I almost feel like going back to all those newsgroup threads and posting answers out of Chris's book. It would make me look like a genius. If you want to be smarter than the average WinForms "expert", read this book.)

Melody reluctantly dragged her eyes away from the television and glanced at the clock. Eight thirty in the evening. Who'd be knocking on her door at this hour? Nikky and Troy had gone to see a film at the theater and she didn't really know that many of her neighbors, though not for a lack of trying.

Rubbing the tears from her eyes, she rose from the sofa and trailed to the door. How typical for someone to interrupt at the most emotional scene of the movie. She'd rented the black and white western film from the local video shop and had looked forward to watching it in peace tonight.

Feeling obscurely annoyed with whoever stood on the other side of the door, she decided they could wait a moment more. Melody paused with her hand on the knob, watching as the dark rodeo hero enfolded the heroine in his manly arms. "Oh, Cecelia, had I only known about the baby, I never would have left you."

Fresh tears streamed down Melody's face when Cecelia forgave all and allowed herself to be swept away on a tide of ardent kisses. The next scene showed a variegated gray sunset, rickety wooden fence and a lone cactus. Smiling mistily, Melody finally opened the door.

Avery noticed Melody's startled gaze when she opened the door and he regretted the way they'd begun their acquaintance. In spite of her tendency to let her mouth run away with her, Avery had to admit otherwise he found her warmth and vitality very appealing.

Hoping to build upon their truce and ask a favor, he smiled his best smile. Avery experienced a feeling of pleasure at the resulting color flooding into Melody's cheeks, glad to find she wasn't completely indifferent to him. But when she sniffed and the hall light revealed red puffy eyes and a pink nose, he experienced a spasm of alarm.

Wiping her cheeks with the back of her hand, she said, "Yes?"

"Melody, are you alright?"

She nodded and went back into her apartment. Avery followed, shutting her door behind him. He watched with puzzlement as she drifted over to her couch and sank onto the cushions. A heavy sigh shook her shoulders.

Avery carefully sat down on the chair opposite and studied her face. "Why are you crying?" he asked gently.

Melody turned a blotchy face to his. "Happy endings always make me cry."

"Happy endings...?"

"Cecelia and Rupert are back together after insurmountable odds." She sniffed again and held a lace hanky to her nose.

Avery wondered idly if she'd spiked her tea. "Uh, are you sure you feel okay?"

Melody looked at him in surprise. "Haven't you seen Rhapsody Ranch? A cowboy like yourself surely-" Her face reddened and she looked away.

Glancing at the rolling credits on the television, he asked, "Are you talking about a movie? That's what made you cry?"

She nodded. "It's one of my favorites. Cecelia and Rupert..."

"Rupert? No self-respecting cowboy would ever have a name like Rupert," he said, feeling suddenly lighthearted. "Real cowboys have names like Mad Dog and One-Fingered Jack."

"There was a character named Sam 'Snake' Snodgrass. He was the bad guy."

A smile quirked Avery's mouth. "I have a feeling you take movies way too seriously."

Melody blew her nose with an unladylike honk, making him jump. "So, what can I do for you, Avery?" she said after giving her nose a delicate wipe.

He surveyed her for a moment, noticing how endearing she looked, even all weepy. "I wanted to ask for a favor."

She cleared her throat. "Yes?"

"I'm working some extra shifts to cover for someone going on vacation and I wondered if you'd mind if Barney slept here at night. If he's alone at night he'll start howling."

Melody peeked up at him through her lashes. Am I so desperate for a man that I think being asked to baby sit a puppy is a compliment? "Sure, I'd be glad to."

Avery appeared relieved. "Uh, starting tonight?" He glanced at his watch. "I'm due at the station in a few minutes."

Giving her nose one last swipe with her hanky, she said expansively, "Bring him over."

Avery got up from the chair and went back to his apartment. In a few moments, Barney came bounding into her living room followed by Avery, carrying a bag of dog food and a leash.

"Please put him on the leash when you take him outside. As you know, he'll take off otherwise. Also hide all your shoes or anything else you think he might get his teeth on."

Melody patted her lap and Barney jumped next to her on the couch.

"Thanks, Melody. I really appreciate this!" Avery left quickly, reminding her to lock the door behind him.

When he was gone, Melody looked at Barney and said, "Hey fellow, there's this great film called Rhapsody Ranch. Want to watch it? It's quite good."

Encore, encore. More, more. Unforgettable characters!

Oh my goodness. I just finished reading, Bonnie Blythe's book, Melody's Knight. Can you say...Hot fudge sundae loaded-with-the-works on a hot summer's day! Fresh and crisp as early spring... and equally delightful!

Bravo, Bonnie. Encore!

The characters were so much fun. The heroine is from England and finds herself in the most precarious circumstances. Curtains on fire, a robber, two men with obviously only one thing on their minds, a burning trash can, and much more. Avery, her fireman hero and neighbor, is always rescuing her from these zany mishaps.

Oh trust me...You won't want to miss this one.

These characters will be forever etched in my memory.

Although I am not an animal lover, I must say that Brarney (the dog) in this books was very funny. I think he is the one that got Melody and Avery together. Melody and her friend Nikki were two gals from England, and it was so funny how Nikki keep trying to set Melody up with guys because she was married and Melody was not. Melody got into more trouble than any one girl should ever. She didn't want Avery but he was always getting her out of trouble and I imagain you can guess how the end came out. Bonnie is a great writter and I wished it was a longer story it ended too fast, I read it in one night,

Fun short read

When Melody takes an evening run to pray about her future husband, it seems like an answered prayer when an engagement ring lands on her feet...literally. When Avery Knight's girlfriend turns down his proposal, he throws the ring, not seeing where it lands. When Melody returns the ring the next day (turns out they are neighbors), a friendship and flirtation develops.

I liked this book. The characters are great...unique and well-developed. Barney, Avery's dog, is a fun addition and serves as a great supporting character. Melody's love of fencing is also an off-beat but interesting part of the story development.

However, the end of the story felt a little off....like it ended too soon with parts of the plot (like the crazy ex-girlfriend) not wrapped up.

Still, I enjoyed the book. The colorful characters and funny situations made for a light, enjoyable read.

Alan Dunn began at The British Sugarcraft Guild with his tutor Margaret Morland. He then went on to study the City and Guilds Bakery and Flour Confectionary Courses and, aged only 17, gave his vey first demonstration to the Gateshead Branch of the British Sugarcraft Guild. He soon realized that he enjoyed demonstrating and teaching as much as the craft itself and it was not long before the word has spread around the country about his incredible skills. Another fine flower making book from Dunn

This is my second Alan Dunn flower book, and I have enjoyed it every bit as much as the first. I use his guides for making polymer clay flowers, though - not sugar paste. I can't imagine using wire for cake flowers as he does; with stems and stamens not edible, why bother to make the flowers from sugar? That aside, the color grading and textures are an inspiration!

A gorgeous book by one of my favourite sugar artists, Alan Dunn. This book has a wide collection of beautiful and exotic flowers. I'd buy this book just for such flowers as the Sacred Lotus and for Alan's instructions on how he makes his stunning butterflies but there is so much more to this book. If you really want to study the art of sugar flowers, this book is a great place to start.

EXCELLENT BOOK ON PRAYER

I can't recommend this prayer book highly enough. The modeled powerful and real life prayer of the author alone are worth the purchase, not to mention the exciting results of his life-changing experiences as he discovers the validity of true praying. As a pastor myself, this book, When Men Pray, has been a great blessing and encouragement to me in my ministry and my prayer walk with God. I have since purchased a few additional copies of this book to share with my church members and have received the same excited responses. Hats off to the author, Larry Schoonover, for a job well done! Will I recommend this book to everybody?? Definitely!!

He has 15 years of varied engineering and emergency management experience on a variety of projects within the province of Ontario, including acting as project manager on various engineering and emergency preparedness projects. He holds a master’s degree in engineering from the University of Guelph, Ontario, and a PhD from the same university. His fields of expertise include force protection, critical infrastructure protection, emergency management, water resources management, forecasting and warning systems, and modeling and simulation.
