A wonderful glimpse into Imperial Rome

This is a great edition of the collected letters of Pliny the Younger, ably translated and introduced by Betty Radice who for many years was the editor of the Penguin Classics. While many readers will immediately look for Pliny's most famous letters, i.e. his description of the eruption of Vesuvius, written for his friend Tacitus, and his letter to the Emperor Trajan asking for an opinion on how to deal with those troublesome Christians, there's a great deal more here, including Pliny writing on ghosts, talking about Roman politics and law, and just chatting to his friends. Especially interesting is the final section of letters which Pliny wrote to the Emperor Trajan when Pliny was the emperor's representative in Pontus and Bithynia. Pliny's obsequious tone is quite different from his personal letters, and I can almost picture Trajan rolling his eyes when his secretary arrived with another of Pliny's overly deferential missives. Overall there's a lot to enjoy here; not only do we obtain a unique glimpse into the workings of the Roman Empire at its height under one of its best emperors, but we also get more of a feel for Pliny than we do for Cicero in his equally famous but often less personable letters.

In high school I was an eager student of Latin, and so having read Caesar, Sallustius, Livius and many other great authors in the original, I was under the impression of having a good background in Roman history. And so it came that I didn't read anything about this particular historical period in at least fifteen years. Pliny's letters made me realise how superficial and cliche-ridden my understanding of that epoch was. It seems that as a high school student one is focused on the language to such a degree that the broader outlines of the enveloping history simply recede into the background.
As a successful, professional lawyer, as a member of a respected family, patron of a vast network of clients, as an accomplished writer, a more or less efficient administrator and prosperous land owner, Pliny embodies the quintessence of the political and cultural elite in the imperial capital. His carefully groomed letters reveal a fascinating picture of the mature Empire. What emerges from this book is a panoramic picture of a world that is not even very different from our own. Admittedly, the summit of the societal pyramid in 2nd century Rome was populated by a much smaller and more select group of people compared to the upper middle class in the advanced economies of today. But apart from the numbers, the life style of these two groups seems to have a lot of things in common. Take geographical mobility as an example. Pliny was originally descendant from the Como area in Northern Italy. Obviously, most of his time was spent in the capital, where he had a villa at the shores of the Thyrannean Sea. Additionally, he had an estate in what is now Tuscany. Finally there was his wife's estate in Campania, which is pretty far down the heel of the Italian peninsula. Much the same as today's professional elite, and undettered by vastly more primitive means of transportation and communication, Pliny shuttles back and forth between his estates, hundreds of kilometers apart. I take this as anecdotal evidence of the fact that, irrespective of historical epoch, elites have always transcended geographical distance in exercising their professional and social obligations. And many other aspects of Pliny's professional and social life remind us of our life world today. In sum, I find the texture and 'feel' of this collection of letters decidedly modern.
Another aspect that filters through Pliny's correspondence is the fact that Rome could be a very dangerous place to live, at least for those in the spotlights of the political scene. The Empire can, perhaps, be best described as a 'quasi-totalitarian' state. A bit like the China of today, or worse. We now from Suetonius' account how damaging and dangerous the paranoia of individuals such as Domitian could be for whoever opposed them. Pliny confirms this through many of his more or less oblique references to Domitian's despotic reign of terror.
The final bundle of letters contains the correspondence with the emperor Trajan, whom Pliny obviously reveres. The insights into the workings of Rome's administrative machinery to govern such a vast empire, are fascinating. Ultimately, one is astonished by the patience and competence that this particular emperor brings to bear to the many and sometimes trivial issues that his man in the East requests his advice on. One would think that Trajan would have better things to do. This testifies of the impressive efficiency and robustness of Rome's governance apparatus.
This collection of letters is thoroughly recommended to anyone interested in studying the predicament of our own time through the distorting but fascinating mirror of the past.

The symposium was sponsored by EXPO 86 and The University of British Columbia, and was part of the specialized periods program of EXPO 86, the 1986 world's fair held in Vancouver. Some 80 attendees were drawn from 11 countries, representing the academic, auto motive and large engine communities. The purpose of the symposium was to provide a critical review of the major alternatives to the internal combustion engine. The scope of the symposium was limited to consideration of combustion engines, so that electric power, for example, was not considered. This was not a reflec tion on the possible contribution which electric propulsion may make in the future, but rather an attempt to focus the proceedings more sharply than if all possible propulsion systems had been considered. In this way all of the contributors were able to participate in the sometimes lively discussion sessions following the presentation of each paper.

Counseling Psychology: An Integrated Positive Approach introduces a new dimension in counseling psychology by integrating theories and skills on treatment with positive aspects of diverse groups into a comprehensive and integrative approach; in this way, the book guides readers to enhance clients’ positive potential, and attend clients’ symptoms and strengths, rather than focusing solely on the treatment of clients’ negative symptoms. Previous counseling models can often miss why, how, and how far clients go to successfully manage living. Counseling tackles how clients manage day to day living, and how they can thrive despite severe symptoms. Empirical evidence has demonstrated that in failing to acknowledge these issues, current counseling psychology can often fall short of maximizing clients’ strength to reduce symptoms and prevent relapses. It can also overlook their critical dimensions of hope, resilience, and stamina, and in turn fail to take an overall perspective. This book includes traditional counseling psychology and positive psychology to comprehensively cover varied theories and then enhance students’ integration of different theories in counseling.

Finally, as client populations increasingly diversify, the book’s integration of traditional counseling approaches with positive psychology enables counselors to tailor integrative counseling to multicultural clients, helping graduate students and mental health professionals become more culturally sensitive in their practice.

About the Author
Ruth Chu-Lien Chao is Associate Professor at the University of Denver where she teaches diversity, Psychopathology, counseling theories, and counseling practicum. Dr. Chao is the author of Multicultural Competencies in Counseling: A Statistical Exploration (2008) as well as over 60 publications, presentations and book chapters. She was the 2007 recipient of the American Psychological Fund Award and the American Psychological Association Grant Award. In 2005, she received the Outstanding Research Award from the Division 17, APA. Dr. Chao serves as faculty advisor to international scholars from Uzbekistan and Taiwan.

Q. What makes this book important right now?

A. Today's web applications are beyond "making websites" and into integrating multiple data sources to present all the information and features that a user could need-- and often making that information available in turn as an API. No system is an island at this point, and APIs are the bridges between the systems.

Q. What information do you hope that readers of your book will walk away with?

A. The book will give a good understanding of the concepts; readers will learn all about HTTP theory, various different types of services, how to work with data types. It goes beyond the standard textbook though and shows examples from real projects (the code examples are also on GitHub), and gives pragmatic advice on how to apply the concepts really well.

Q. What's the most exciting thing happening in your space?

A. Seeing longstanding web developers step beyond the browser, and build systems that can work with rich AJAX frontends, mobile sites, and everything else. It's a time of great change, and it's all powered by APIs. PHP was made "to solve the web problem," so it's perfect as the backend technology for all these inspiring innovations as it's scalable and fast.

Q. Can you give us a few tips for smarter web development?

Get to know your tools! Your browser should have plugins to let you observe the HTTP traffic and also change it by editing cookies or sending extra headers. Mastering other tools like cURL and Wireshark can make API development much easier and faster.

Always consider the failure case. Most APIs work perfectly well when client are server are making expected moves. How your API responds in adverse conditions or in response to nonsense requests really defines its quality.

Choose your technologies for your user, not for your developer. Making websites, we deliver to the browser. Making APIs, we deliver to any number of other unknown platforms and there are many design decisions to make. The "right" choices depend much more on your target user base than on your own preferences or any consideration for what is new and shiny.

Have confidence. Try to avoid being overwhelmed by all the information that is out there about the "one true way" to create an API. There are lots of options and in the realm of APIs, especially RESTful ones, they are usually strong and vocal opinions. A good understanding of HTTP concepts is the only must-have; don't try to please everyone you meet on the internet-- the only way to deliver a decent API is to begin!

Finally, don't be afraid to break the rules. Every application is different, and while it's vital to understand why things are normally done a particular way, you may find the exception that breaks the rule. In that situation, have confidence and follow your instincts rather than the rules.

and to the point. I enjoyed how the book was laid out and the examples that were given. It isn't information that isn't already out there, but to have a concise and well written book is worth the money. The author did a good job with the content and showed various ways to tackle services.

Rich with contents with only 104 pages. Curl command line examples give me another level of understanding PHP CURL package. Several debug and documentation tools mentioned in the book also help me programming faster and better.

Great introduction to web services

It would have been nice to see a more fully fleshed out example of both a server and a client included. I was left feeling like there was a step missing, but maybe as I start implementing my first API it will make more sense.

The description of RESTful services seems a bit at odds with other reading I have done.

Those issues aside, I thought it was an easy read and a great introduction to the topic. While it may not have answered all my questions, it certainly provided enough information that I know what to look into in more depth to find the answers I seek.

Book is good but beware you will probably have to get the CD from the publisher

The contents of the book are excellent but it is supposed to come with a complimentary companion CD. The 1st time I received the book there was no CD. I contacted Amazon to see if they could just send me the CD but the person I talked to wouldn't have any part of that. Had to send a complete replacement. I get a replacement and guess what, no CD with it either. I'm guessing that Amazon's entire inventory is without the CDs. After receiving the 2nd one without CD I contacted the publisher direct and they sent me a CD.
