Not a nuts-and-bolts "how to", but a beautiful reference

I bought this book hoping to obtain useful nuts and bolts information about practical woodworking for an amateur level woodworker. Instead, this book is beautifully written and serves as an overall academic reference to woodworking in general. However, I didn't find any immediately practical information by which I could walk outside and apply to my meger woodshop so I returned it--it would have ended up collecting dust on my coffee table rather than becoming a dog-eared information source in my workshop.

A Good Reference Book

This book reminds me of several other books in my collection: The Readers' Digest Complete Do it Yourself Manual, and similar books being published by Home Depot and Lowe's. The book attempts to cover an astonishing range of topics, and what it lacks in depth is made up in encyclopedic coverage. It is well done, but shows both the strengths and weaknesses of the genre. If you are looking for something along this line, you won't be disappointed. It is a useful reference, which will probably see a lot of use. On the other hand, if you are looking for in depth instructions on how to do something in particular, you are better off looking elsewhere.
The book begins with a very strong section on the properties of wood, discussing 20 distinct types of softwoods, 56 types of hardwoods, as well as veneers, plywoods, particle boards and fiberboards. Each type is discussed with comments on sources, characteristics, workability, weight, and common uses. After a brief section on furniture design, it proceeds to three sections on tools. These take up the bulk of the book. There are few recommendations on which tools to buy first, or which to put off until later. The authors don't tell us much about what to look for when choosing a tool. Each tool is recommended just as highly as all the others, with sections on typical uses and how to perform them. On the other hand, the coverage of techniques is incredibly thorough in the handful of pages devoted to each tool. There are also a number of techniques here specifically aimed at those of us who have a less than complete collection of tools.
The authors follow this with a brief section on setting up the home workshop, and then a chapter on joinery. Like most older books, the construction of dovetail joints is shown entirely by hand, rather than with a router and set of dovetail jigs. This is followed by sections on wood bending, veneers, carving and finishing.
My copy, though printed in 2000, was written in 1989. The book is showing its age, particularly in the sections on power tools. The most striking examples are the pictures of DeWalt power tools in a sickly green color, which must have preceeded their current trademark yellow. In most sections, this makes very little difference, but in places one wishes for a second edition. The authors discuss combination tools and radial arm saws in great depth, while ignoring modern additions like the compound miter saw. The book reads like one written by a committee, with bland, unopinionated language. This is not a book you would enjoy reading from cover to cover, but that is probably not the intent. It is properly viewed as an encyclopedic reference work.
This is a good book to buy in the early stages of learning about woodworking. I would recommend this book as a good second book, rather than a first book, because there is too little guidance for the neophyte.

Supremely disappointing

I had read Fr. Greeley's book about the 1978 conclaves and enjoyed it immensely. I hadn't thought to look for this one until very recently, but was happy to find it. Unfortunately, this book is not what it claims to be. As other have noted, most of the writing is about the problems of the Church and how Fr. Greeley thinks they should be solved. Even the reporting on the conclave, thin though it is, was peppered with personal observations on what the Church should do and what the next pope needs to be.

If you followed the news reports at the time, you won't learn anything new from this book. Gone are the accounts of the back-alley deals, the dinnertime whispers, the private campaigning and the political maneuvering of a conclave. Instead, there is a cursory mention of what the Italian press was reporting, sort of sprinkled in among the diatribe. Benedict's full homily from his investiture is reprinted as well, I assume to fill space. Fr. Greeley repeats himself again and again, often verbatim.

So, I was disappointed. If you're looking for the sequel to the 1978 book, don't buy this. If you want to know how Fr. Greeley would run the Church, this is right up your alley.

Disappointing Pope

I really liked the late, lamented Father Greeley's work on the conclave of 1978-THE MAKING OF THE POPLE 1978. It is a wonderful book detailing as best an outsider could, the events that led up to first the election of John Paul I then that of John Paul II. So, naturally, I was excited to discover-somewhat late I realize-that he had written a similar book on the election of Benedict XVI. Though enjoyable, as always-Father Greeley can almost never write a dull book- I did not find it to have near the depth of the 1978 book or contain near the understanding of what happened in 2005 compared to what happened in 1978. His dislike of Joseph Ratzinger-eventually Benedict XVI - is obvious from the beginning. It was odd that I discovered this book and started reading it about the time Benedict decided to retire. Father Greeley was, I assume, in too poor health to attend the conclave that elected Pope Francis. How he would have enjoyed that.
Greeley's very recent death precluded me writing a letter of appreciation for all his life's work.

Mean Spirited

Mean spirited...well written but mean spirited. I knew before this that Ft Greeley disliked then Bishop Raztzinger-a great deal. This book, while well written loses so much of what is interesting when it goes off on rants about then man who became Pope. If not for those parts it would have been an excellent book.
If you are not Roman Catholic, this is not a good book for you. It is very "insider" and there are many books far better for a non-Catholic to read about how a Pope is elected.

Positive Thinking, Written Goals, Tithing.

If you're a veteran reader of self-help books, you'll recognize most of what you read in "Im Rich Beyond...".
The authors mix their personal story with how-to's for attaining all you desire in life.
Their message is, basically, this: use positive thinking (the affirmation "I'm Rich Beyond my Wildest Dreams" sung to a familiar tune, for example), written goals (they advise that you make lots of lists of the things you want --in 79 cent notebooks--) and Tithe.
The tithing part (along with those 79 cent notebooks) seem to be a particularly important part of the process.
Did I mention that the authors have a website where their e-books and other products are sold?
In any case, as I said, you won't find much new here. But the writing isn't too bad, and, as long as you don't buy cartons of notebooks (or spend too much time at their website), you could spend your money on worse books than this one. Thus, the three star rating.
However, for a really great book on manifesting what you want, try "Write It Down, Make It Happen." The author of that one has no website, and sells nothing else that I know of. She just outlines this system of ASKING THE UNIVERSE FOR WHAT YOU WANT in a way that contains less marketing.

A Real Life Manual For Getting What You Want In LIfe

I was really lucky to come across "I'm Rich Beyond My Wildest Dreams". This book clearly explains how you can attract abundance, prosperity, and great health in your life.
I have used the manifesting system described in this book to have dinner with one of the most famous personal development speakers and gurus in the world!!! I have used this system to eliminate some serious business problems, such as a really problematic business client.
I'm using this system to manifest more money and wealth in my life than I ever thought possible.
The key is to actually do the exercises that Thomas Pauley and Penelope Pauley discuss. If you want to live the life of your dreams, you cannot go wrong with this book. Buy this book today and start using it!!!
I also recommend that you get Marc Allen's "The Millionaire Course", "Goals" by Brian Tracy, and "Dynamic Laws of Prosperity" by Catherine Ponder.

A Simple Formula That Works

I've read a ton of self help books. All of them offer some good advice, and they often repeat themselves. This book also contains ideas I've read before - but it takes all the new agey melodrama out of the formula. The author gives specifics about what to do to increase your money flow, and doesn't apologize for wanting to "be rich beyond his wildest dreams." I found that refreshing. He calls money what it is: something to have an awful lot of fun with, and also something God given. I was amused to read his comment that this system would work whether you believed in it or not. Well, he's not kidding! I had a "yeah - whatever!" attitude when I started. But after I tried his suggestions, my income started to increase in surprizing ways. I still refer to it often. I recommend it! And check out his website. It's also helpful.

Too few quality illustrations unlike the "richly illustrated" description can make you think

When I see a book with a cover like this, and then read in the description that the book is "richly illustrated", I expect a decent quantity of original quality reconstructions like those in the cover and back cover (made by Mark Hallett), specially for a book that sells new for a hundred dollars. Nothing more misleading: Most of the illustrations are drawings of bones, but the actual reconstructions depicting behaviour and adaptations are divided between a handful of frankly bad ones and some good ones: There are eleven illustrations with the quality of the ones in the cover and back cover (including those two) but not all are original, some were reused from other publications illustrated by the same author and most of them are black and white. Why the authors didn't included more original reconstructions and why they didn't comissioned all to Hallett (a professional paleoartist and a good one) is beyond me.
Lots of information on bones of scimitar cats compared to Smilodon though, but still pretty lacking in reconstructions which I deem very important for palaeontology works.

This book is fantastic. In this tome there is rich biology and paleontology that are supplemented with plenty of high quality illustrations and photographs. The study of sabre-toothed cats has arrived at a whole new level.
