Outstanding volume of essays

I agree with Doc Dave in his earlier review that this is in many ways a better text than the standard ones out there. It's clearer, more concise, covers the advanced topics quite well considering its brevity, and as the Doc says, it's a fraction of the price of the actual texts.

I used this book to get thru a genetics course many years ago, and it was worth ten times the price I paid for it. It explained the concepts better than either the professor I had, or his T.A., who had graduated from U.C. Berkeley.

The presentation of classical genetics is the best I know of. You can find explanations of the molecular aspects that are probably as good, but for the classical stuff, and the coverage of the mathematical problems that derive from that approach, this is the best book I've ever seen.

I've used Schaum's outlines for a number of difficult subjects over the years, including electrical circuits and electronics, digital electronics and theory, genetics, differential equations, biochemistry, and applied statistics. They continue to be the best aids outside the classroom itself for the more difficult subject areas.

best genetics text available

The Stansfield/Elrod outline remains as comprehensive as any of the intro to genetics textbooks currently available. At about 10-15% the cost of the "standard" texts, this outline delivers the same material with more clarity, and often more accuracy. The concepts of classical genetics, which often prove more challenging for students than molecular aspects, are covered admirably in this book. While those who enjoy colorful illustration and pastel text boxes might be disappointed, the b&w figures in this book are extremely clear, logical and most importantly helpful towards learning the material. No solution manual or supplemental CD-ROM is required. Highly recommended as a reference, or as a text for general genetics classes.

Larson, author of the bestselling Seven Weeks to Sobriety, believes that many doctors misdiagnose nutritional imbalances as psychological disorders. She argues that most people who are depressed, fatigued or addicted to food, cigarettes or alcohol suffer from a deficiency of vitamins or amino acids that is only exacerbated by drugs like Xanax, Prozac and lithium. Larson provides checklists of symptoms, possible disorders and corrective formulas along with simple but thorough explanations of how the biochemistry works. She plausibly links biochemical emotional problems with the gradual shift in the American diet over the past 60 years toward sugary, carbohydrate-laden and processed foods, which disturb the body's insulin production and deprive the brain of much needed vitamins and nutrients. The author urges readers to seek out doctors to run lab tests in order to identify possible deficiencies, blood-sugar abnormalities and food allergies. Occasionally, Larson's advice gets lost in her sales pitch for her Health Recovery Center in Minnesota ("The nutrients used at Health Recovery Center are the best quality we can find"). Larson, a nutritionist and director of the Health Recovery Center in Minneapolis, contends that an imbalance of body chemicals often causes emotional problems and that making appropriate dietary changes will restore the brain's equilibrium. In addition to suggesting which foods to avoid or to eat, Larson provides lists of supplements to be taken on a daily basis and numerous questionnaires for detecting deficiencies. The long list of recommended supplements promotes extensive pill-popping, and there are regular reminders that those available from the Health Recovery Center at their 800-number are "the best quality." Larson's advice about the value of nutritional repair for depression and other emotional woes is sound, but with no clarification, her jargon is often confusing, e.g., "Symptoms indicating tyrosine or 1-phenylalanine is needed to increase norespinephine levels." RARE Information! Simple & Safe Cures for Mental Health Issues

Dr Mathews-Larsen has provided the world with a PRECIOUS GIFT in documenting her protocols in a book that anyone can access. This book SAVED my life, so of course there is no stronger recommendation possible. It's easy to read and follow. She explains how prescription drugs do more harm than good and were actually designed to mimic the action of nutrients! After more than a decade of career crashing, debilitating chronic fatigue, Dr Larsen's simple, safe nutrient protocols healed my poor sleep, normalized my moods, eliminated my anxiety, stabilized my blood sugar, gave me physical ENERGY & mental FOCUS and also many side bonuses like improving my eyesight and eliminating water retention. (Amino acids are MIRACULOUS!) She provides very RARE information about various nutritional deficiencies that cause depression, anxiety, and addictions, pointing to easy physical CURES for illnesses that seemed intractable.

This book is amazingly complete & thorough yet also concise. This a a PRACTICAL book on how to get better, not a book of theory. I love how she provides symptom checklists but also tells you where you can get lab testing done, too. I didn't use Dr Larsen's supplements, since I found them cheaper on iherb.com, which has the KRAZY-great prices on supplements! I recommend Anabol Naturals for the aminos (the blend is 99% the same as Dr Larsen's & is pharmaceutical grade.)

Dr Larsen's book provides enough information to heal yourself. However, in case you have pyroluria, I'd like to provide a few extra tips based on my experience. Because pyroluria causes zinc deficiency, you will automatically have copper toxicity. So you must realize that you will definitely go thru an uncomfortable healing crisis at some point as you detoxify excess copper. Google "copper toxicity" and you will find excellent information by Lawrence Wilson, MD. I also recommend googling "healing crisis."

In addition to this book, I also recommend "Nutrient Power" by Dr Bill Walsh. If you read these two books you will be on the forefront of the future of mental health. Incredible amounts of needless suffering is happening on this planet just because of simple nutrient deficiencies. Our bodies do not have pharmaceutical deficiencies...the human body is designed to run on amino acids, vitamins & minerals, and natural hormones, not prescription drugs! Once you heal yourself with Dr Larsen's protocols, please consider doing just a little bit to promote this information among your communities, because it truly is no less than life saving. This book changed my life!

I had no idea until I read this book that nearly all of my health problems and symptoms were related, genetic and a result of a nutrient deficiency. I spent more than 10 years being told by various doctors that they couldn't find anything wrong with me and yet I suffered from strange symptoms. After getting on Ms. Larson's vitamin program, these symptoms began to fade away...some almost overnight! I feel like a normal person again! I can't recommend this book enough. I was surprised that there are so many genetic disorders that can be easily helped with nutrient therapy. This book has helped me more than any other health book I've read.

E como a gente vê as regras de instante em instante nos textos em inglês não dá jamais para esquecer que na pasta da letra A contém os seguintes dados: No alfabeto soa ei,como em VITAMIN A, no prefixo inglês soa a de coisa, como em ABOUT, AROUND, AWAY, APIECE. Abrindo o arquivo de X vou me lembrar de seu som no alfabeto que é éks de anexo, como em X-RAY. No começo soa z de zebra, como em XANADU, XEROX, XENOPHOBIA. E da segunda letra em diante na palavra X soa ks de fixo, como em MEXICAN, BOX, EXERCISE. Nunca esqueceremos de que no sistema AEIOU + CONS 1 + E/I + VOG a vogal I soa i de mil, como em VIDEO, LINEAR, TRADITION, MATHEMATICIAN. O arquivo de WA diz que esse Grupo soa uó, como em SWAMP, WAS, WATER e SWAT. Em 2 anos se é possível chegar perto dos sons de 1 milhão de palavras em inglês, incluindo afixos, como já foi comprovado nas 2 mil horas/aula no curso de extensão e especialização em pronúncia do inglês ministrado pelo linguista e Prof. Fábio Alencar de Recife desde 2008. 4 a 0 para as regras

About the Author
Margaret L. Andersen (B.A., Georgia State University; M.A., Ph.D. University of Massachusetts, Amherst) is the Edward F. and Elizabeth Goodman Rosenberg Professor of Sociology at the University of Delaware. She is the author of On Land and On Sea: A Century of Women in the Rosenfeld Collection (Mystic Seaport Museum); Race, Class, and Gender: An Anthology (co-edited with Patricia Hill Collins); Sociology: Understanding a Diverse Society (with Howard F. Taylor); Sociology: The Essentials (with Howard F. Taylor); Understanding Society: An Introductory Reader (co-edited with Kim Logio and Howard F. Taylor); and, Race and Ethnicity in Society: The Changing Landscape (co-edited with Elizabeth Higginbotham).

 

Professor Andersen is the Vice President of the American Sociological Association (ASA) and recipient of the ASA’s prestigious Jessie Bernard Award—given annually to someone whose work expands the horizons of sociology to include the study of women. She also received the 2004 Sociologists for Women in Society Feminist Lecturer Award and the 2008 Eastern Sociological Society Robin F. Williams Lecturer Award. She has received two teaching awards at the University of Delaware: the University Excellence in teaching Award and the College of Arts and Sciences Outstanding Teacher Award. She currently chairs the National Advisory Board for the Stanford University Center for Comparative Studies in Race and Ethnicity and is the former editor of Gender & Society.

good over all but some studies cited are 12+ years old/not fully up to date

the book is consistent to the ideas that society and culture has greatly influenced our current view of women. most studies are fairly up to date but other studies cited were irresponsibly put together. more specifically the chapter that explores the same sex sexuality of lesbians and gay males is out of date. the author uses studies cited from 1998 to say that there is no evidence that homosexuality is biologically linked. it would have been more accurate to say evidence is inconclusive but to say there is no evidence what so ever, was very upsetting.

this could have been done to keep the consistent idea that social structure affects almost everything about us, throughout the book. i believe this idea to be true, it dose affect sexuality as well but to say its the only factor in sexuality was offensive and ignores a whole world of research about the topic. its important to note the author doesn't put down any race, gender or sexual orientation.

by all means the book is still good and is good enough to be used in womens studies. this review is not meant to imply that there is any prejudice because i dont feel there is any. i just feel a good 25 percent of the text should be revamped and updated.

It is a fairly well written text and dose provide the information needed to fullfil its intended purpose. its merely needs a bit more evaulation before becoming a 5 star text.
