The girl thinks their plants are ugly compared to flowers, but soon learns that vegetables can make a very delicious soup one that the whole neighborhood wants to try. Soon everyone is growing Chinese vegetables as well as flowers. A recipe for "Ugly Vegetable Soup" is included. Lin's brightly colored gouache illustrations perfectly match her story, creating a patchwork-quilt effect as the neighbors' backyards all converge. Families of all kinds engage in all sorts of activities while children play happily together. Each double-page spread is a different color with a different pattern scattered lightly across it, serving as a frame for the illustrations and as background for the text. Filling spaces with curlicues and dabs of color, Lin places her characters in a tidy suburban setting replete with happy families playing on unfenced, wildflower-dotted lawns. Closing with a recipe and glossary, this brief consciousness raiser makes a mouth watering companion for Rosemary Wells' Yoko (1998) or books like Nora Dooley's multicultural standby, Everybody Cooks Rice (1991). Ugly Vegetables are made into a delicious soup! Little girl and neighbor's learn about another culture's vegetables.

The story tells of a little girl who helped her mom plant a Chinese vegetable garden. The little girl wished her mom would plant flowers like the joining neighbor's. The story shows how the daughter and neighbor's enjoyed the Chinese garden harvest -the soup that her mom cooked up. Then the following garden season, neighbors startied growing Chinese vegetables too!

This book brings back memories for me as a Chinese girl growing up in Texas. Feeling different. Then appreciating my mother's vision and skills. The brightly colored illustrations are fun, and the story has been a wonderful jumping off point for conversations between my mother, my kids, and myself about culture and community. It's a family favorite.

An awesome book and receipe included, how great is that!

Each Grace Lin book I get, I am just so impressed by her talent! Every child loves to get their hands into dirt and growing flowers or vegetables is always fun and gives the child great pride to show everyone their hard work and or beautiful flowers!

Every child wants to be just the same as their friends, especially those in the neighborhood. Mom and daughter start in the spring to plant their garden and while everyone else in the neighborhood each have their own way of tending their gardens totally different from how her and her mom garden. When their plants appear they look like grass, where other neighbors' appear they look like normal plants.

The little girl constantly asks questions as all children do, why mommy, why mommy and her mommy patiently answers each of her daughters questions. When others in the neighborhood have beautiful flowersthat smell so good, the little girls garden has what she sees as ugly plants with no beautiful scents. Once the vegetables are ready to be harvested the little girl and mother gather their wheelbarrow with their vegetables. Later that afternoon the daughter is out playing in the yard and smells a wonderful smell and it's coming from her house! Her mom has made soup using their harvest and her mom gives her a bowl..... it tastes so good! Then there comes knocking at their door and it's the little girls neighbors wanting to trade their beautiful flowers for a bowl of soup. The Mom tells the neighbors about each vegetables and the next spring the little girl notices her neighbors growing " Ugly Vegetables" too!

I love that Lin includes a receipe to make using these so called "ugly vegetables" and that she included their names and even sounded them out. Keep up the good work Mrs. Lin and I'll keep on buying your books and singing praises to anyone who'll read my reviews!

From them he obtained firsthand versions of events and other reminiscences, and he has distilled these accounts into a work of history characterized by thorough research and objective narration.

These fascinating interviews were no more important, however, than were the author’s many hours of laborious search in libraries for accounts of the events from Carranza’s last year to Calles’ final retirement from the Mexican scene. The author read scores of impassioned versions of what transpired during these fateful years, accounts written from every point of view, virtually all of them unpublished in English and many of them documents which had never been published in any language.

Combining this material with the personal reminiscences, Dulles has provided a narrative rich in its new detail, dispassionate in its presentation of facts, dramatic in its description of the clash of armies and the turbulence of rough-and-tumble politics, and absorbing in its panoramic view of a people’s struggle.

In it come to life the colorful men of the Revolution —Obregón, De la Huerta, Carranza, Villa, Pani, Carillo Puerto, Morones, Calles, Portes Gil, Vasconcelos, Ortiz Rubio, Garrido Canabal, Rodríguez, Cárdenas. (Dulles’ narrative of their public actions is illumined occasionally by humorous anecdotes and by intimate glimpses.) From it emerges also, as the main character, Mexico herself, struggling for self-discipline, for economic stability, for justice among her citizens, for international recognition, for democracy.

This account will be prized for its encyclopedic collection of facts and for its important clarification of many notable events, among them the assassination of Carranza, the De La Huerta revolt, the assassination of Obregón, the trial of Toral, the resignation of President Ortiz Rubio, and the break between Cárdenas and Calles. The Key Principle

The best in the game delivers again!

As a physique athlete and fitness author, I have learned a great deal from Scott's content over the years. His work always has that rare combination of scientific research plus decades of practical experience as a coach. This book is no different. Actually, I take that back. This book is very different, because this book dares to go where most diet, fitness, and nutrition books never go.

Let me share with you a few quotes from the book so you can see what I mean: "Psychology and sociology have as much to do with the modern diet dilemma as does nutrition, physiology, and biology." "Cognitive association and emotional reward always trumps rational thought." I couldn't agree more.

In this book Scott addresses some of the most important, but often most overlooked aspects, of health and fitness success -- emotional awareness, behavioral psychology strategies, social and environmental factors, internal vs. external focus, etc. He does this all to get you out of the short-term, quick fix "diet" mentality, and onto the path towards a long-term, lifestyle solution. Every coach, trainer, health & fitness enthusiast, and/or chronic dieter should have this book on their shelves.

About the Author
Pandit Sethuraman was born on the 31st May, 1925. He had his education in Tiruchirapalli, India. He joined the Defence Services in India, then under the British crown at an young age during the World War II. He quickly rose to an enviable position by his sheer hard work and sharp intellect. His research-oriented mind together with his interest in occult sciences helped him analyse the lives of hundreds of soldiers in his unit, their victories and defeats or deaths. It was then that he discovered a definite pattern of events in human lives which corresponded to their dates of birth and names. This revelation changed the course of his life. He realised that he was born for a mission that would help the humanity. Spurred on by the wisdom that dawned on him, he decided to pursue his avowed mission of helping people through the science called Numerology. He resigned his job forgoing a high status and salary and followingly, in 1954, published his all- time bestseller, "ADHISTA VINGYANAM" ( SCIENCE OF FORTUNE ) in Tamil. The book was an instant success all over the world. Interestingly, the publication of this book was never advertised or its sale promoted in anyway. The readers who read the book and were benefited by it spread the message it contained and the demand for this extra-ordinary book on Numerology grew in leaps and bounds. That is the secret of success of the original work in Tamil which played an important role in the lives of multitudes of people all over the world. After publishing the thirteenth edition (Tamil) in 1997 while in the peak of his fame, Pandit Sethuraman passed away. But the legacy continues and the Pandit’s son and disciple, V.S. Guruswamy has brought out the editions in English, Telugu, Hindi and also Chinese for the benefit of global readers in the year 2003. It is one of the best books that I have ever read

I received the kindle edition of Science of Fortune last week and I have been completed the reading. It is one of the best books that I have ever read. You will love the writing of the author.
This book is full with numbers of examples using that you can found that our date of birth and day of birth are very important for our success or failure.
I love the horoscope and vastu as well and this book is very helpful for getting the deep information on how numbers work.
So if you want to test yourself, this book is must for you. Highly recommended.
