sexy and sweet

This was sexy and sweet, a lovely example of how Ms Francis draws her characters so vividly, in shorter as well as longer books. Written from Rick’s point of view, it showcases his believably masculine character, often lusty but immediately sympathetic.
Mal the radiographer is nervous in front of a new lover but confident enough to make the first move. How refreshing to have the town/country divide in their background and nationalities, not just in the scenery LOL.
There was much more to enjoy than just a very sexy love scene. And one of the best and boldest opening scenes I’ve read for a long time.

I like this short little prelude to the series!

I really enjoyed this short story prelude. The details of the MRI made me chuckle, because they were so spot on. It appears that MRIs in the UK follow the exact same pattern as here in the US. I have to have them regularly, and every step of the way through the process was like she was reading my mind. I remember that panic attack the first time I had one as well. Great job with that!

Rick Brandt rushes close to an hour and half from his sleepy little English village to London to take an available last minute appointment for an MRI on his shoulder. Having just had one of those as well, I could sympathize. There is only one major problem, Rick doesn’t realize that he is claustrophobic until he opens up his eyes, with his head locked in that little cage contraption they use, and sees that the top of the tube is literally inches from his nose. When he panics, and hits the panic button, he is pulled out, talked down, and then put back in to finish the test.

He asks Mal, the man doing the scan to talk to him instead of making him listen to the vapid radio station on the headphones. Rick quickly falls for Mal’s voice, imagining a blond, blue eyed Malcolm in the other room. Imagine his surprise when he meets Malik, the young Pakistani Muslim man who is actually behind the voice.

I can’t wait to see where the story goes next!

Awesome Prayer Resource for Moms

I was so excited to see a new book on prayer by Priscilla Shirer, Fervent: A Woman's Battle Plan to Serious, Specific and Strategic Prayer.

Full confession here, I am rather the Priscilla Shirer fan. I find her books to be direct, practical and very scripture based. Having said that, this may just be my absolute favorite of all of her books. I judge how well I like a Christian book by how many little sticky flags I place on the pages. I often will quote these thoughts in my ministry (giving full credit of course). This one is covered in little purple flags!

I love the organization of this book. As usual, Ms. Shirer is very organized in the way she writes. She begins with a basic coverage of prayer and specifically regaining your passion for prayer. She then covers nine specific categories she believes we should be addressing in our prayer life: our focus, our identity, our family, our past, our fears, our purity, our pressures, our hearts and our relationships.

Each chapter begins with a little "If I were your enemy" thought. I loved these and have already quoted one on the Parenting Like Hannah Facebook page. It's a great way for her to frame a la C.S. Lewis how Satan must view his plans to derail us from the life God meant for us to live. The chapter is filled with her personal experiences and her insights based on scripture.

One of my favorite parts of this book is that it is filled with scripture. She not only gives the citations within the book, but provides the quotes as well. This is always my pet peace about Christian books - having to flip back and forth within the book or between the book and the Bible to check out scriptures. Kudos to her for making it easy. Sometimes she adds her own thoughts after the scripture, but often she lets them stand on their own.

I won't steal her thunder by quoting lots of passages. Let me just say this book is very practical, very well organized, very thought provoking and very scripture based. If you read my blog regularly, I rarely say you must absolutely own a book. I want to be respectful of your finances. I often say this book is worth reading, but to me that is very different from being a "must read". This in my opinion is one of those "must reads". It even has a tear out section in the back for prayers you can take with you wherever you go.

If you want help with your prayer life, I am sure there are plenty of resources that may help you. I personally would choose to purchase this one. I really think it has the tools you need to enrich, enhance and even jump start your prayer life.

This Means War!

Priscilla has written a book on prayer that is as practical as they come. It's not a theoretical dissertation on prayer. It's a nuts and bolts "let's get on our knees and get after it" guide. Step by step coverage of ten different areas of your life: passion, focus, identity, family, past, fears, purity, pressures, hurts and relationships. She includes numerous specific scriptures for each of these ten areas. If this book doesn't motivate you in the war against the enemy of your soul I don't know what will. "Prayer is the portal that brings the power of heaven down to earth. It is kryptonite to the enemy and to all his ploys against you....His reign of terror stops here. Stops now. He might keep coming, but he won't have victory anymore."

'... an inductive piece, written from within by a member of the deaf community rather than by someone looking from without and is all the stronger for being so. Lewis breaks new theological ground and, while her work is primarily focused in an Anglican setting, the issues she addresses and the solutions and strategies which she suggests have value far beyond the Anglican context. She highlights the gap that often exists between talk of empowerment and the action that is required to actually bring about the desired change, although any specific structural changes which may be needed to bridge that gap are implicit, rather than explicit in the text. In Lewis's view, the challenge 'is not how d/Deaf people can have access to the hearing Church, but how the Church can become an organization that contributes to the liberation of all d/Deaf people.' She has set out a strong theological foundation on which to build and has sign-posted us towards what such a Church could look like.' --Practical Theology

About the Author
Hannah Lewis completed her first degree in Natural Sciences and Theology at Corpus Christi College, Cambridge in 1993 and her PhD at Birmingham University in 2003. She was ordained a priest in the Church of England in 1998 and currently works as Team Leader for work among Deaf people in Liverpool diocese. She has been Deaf since childhood, is fluent in BSL and has been involved in the Deaf Church in a variety of capacities since 1997. She serves as committee member responsible for lay training on the National Deaf Church Council and is a founder member of DECUK, Deaf Ecumenical Clergy UK, which provides CME for Deaf clergy in the UK.
